p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Recommendation of Ligtht 135mm Prime

Hi Folks,

The recent discussion of the CV30-70 vs the new Sony 24-70 G Master is very interesting and I am paying more attention to those oldies but goodies. I am traveling to Europe next month and was planning to bring the following:

Sony A7II, A7RII,
Voigtlander 15mm E mount,
Canon 24mm T&S II, Canon 24-70 L II (if the Sony 24-70 G doesn't arrive in time)
Sony FE 70-200 F4.

I doubt that I will use the Sony 70-200 much though. I am thinking of getting a light and good tele if I am not bring the 70-200. I read some very good reviews on the 100mm Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 3.5/100 (C/Y) but 100mm is not that much longer than the 70mm of the mid zoom. I am thinking maybe a 135mm of some sort so I don't need to lug around the 70-200 F4.

Would appreciate some suggestions. My interest for this trip is mainly landscape, city/architecture. I use the Metabone IV adapter for the Canon T&S and 24-70 so I am OK with MF and adapters. TIA!

Douglas

I supposed you want something that is smaller than your FE 70-200. How about a Minolta 135 2.8 or if you are willing/able to spend a bit more money, a Leica 135mm f4?

The 135 2.8 is not the best lens Minolta made and it suffers from CA until stopped down, but it is a well-liked, because it's compact, reasonably sharp and quite cheap. The Leica 135 4 will probably be better. For a lens with the red dot, used copies are reasonably priced. Of course, there is the current Apo-Telyt 135 f3.4, but even used that lens carries a hefty price tag.

If you have the MB IV the 135L weighs in at 850gms and 11cm x 8cm. Superb lens that is easy to use!

Thank you all for chiming in! The Canon 135L is an interesting idea. The Sony FE 70-200 is 80 x 175 mm, 840g, so not much weight saving there, but the Canon is shorter. I did a quick research on the Leica 135 F4 Chris recommended, it's cheap ($250-$300) but I will need another adapter.

Decisions decisions...

The Minolta 135/2.8 is a pocket rocket. Fast AF, lovely color. Sharp lens. Runs for $200ish. Loved that lens.

Dance 1 with the above combination. I am likely buying a Sigma MC-11 with hopes it outperform the Metabones IV.

Contax 135/2.8. It's really light and pretty good for the money.

Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar MC 135mm f/3.5 (430g, 49mm filters) and Konica Hexanon AR 135mm f/3.2 (390g, 55mm filters) are worth considering. One advantage shared by both lenses is a minimum focusing distance of 1 meter, which is low compared to other 135 teles.

Hi Douglas! I'd take the 100L IS. Great lens and IS.

I have never used it, but by reputation, the C/Y 135/2/8 Sonnar is a good lens at a great price on the used market. Weight is 585 gms. That is my recommendation as well. It's hard to go wrong with any of the Zeiss C/Y lenses.

+1 for the Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar MC 135mm f/3.5 - an outstanding lens from a bygone era that performs incredibly well on my A7RII, and I splurged all of $78 on it! I spent more for the €95 Novoflex NEX-CO adapter

A lot of people recommend the Minolta 135/2.8. Is the Minolta 135/3.5 in the same league? It's a little lighter and ridiculously cheap.

Interesting discussions. Jim, I had the Canon 100 L macro when I was shooting Canon, superb lens, but I now have the Sony FE 90mm, both are a bit too close to the long end of the 24-70f2.8 G master that I am getting. The Canon 135 L f2 is great lens that can be had for around $700+ used, but I am not really looking for a portrait oriented lens. I am looking for something light but good for street, landscape stuff for this trip so I won't need to lug around the Sony FE70-200 f4 just for the very occasional use at its focal length. The good thing about the Canon is I have an adapter already that I use the Canon 24mm T&S lens, so I won't need to buy another adapter for another make of a 135mm. Thank you for. Too many choices, first world problem.

Just earlier today I discovered a Konica 135mm f/3.5 stored along with my very first camera - a hand me down Konica. Don't remember ever really using that lens, but it's really light and a quick search indicates that it's not a bad lens. I'll have to get an adapter and test it out on my Sony. Wondering if there's a big image quality difference between my lens and the f/3.2 version....

It'll be kinda fun going back to at least playing around with the lenses I started with 20 years ago.

I own the 135mm Minolta 2.8 and is fairly light ( 366 grams ). I have always found this lens to be sharp and quick to focus. The minimum focus distance is about 3 feet which leaves a little to be desired but not a breaking point. For street photography it is great because its size isn't that large so your subjects don't notice you the way you would say you had the 70-200mm attached. It has that incognito effect. For Landscape work i have always been pleased, being it is so light and short that the tripod doesn't have any problems holding the target. Below is an example of a landscape shot from the top Bald Mountain inside of Bear Mountain State Park ( NY Side ).

Thank you Charles. That would have been an even better shot in fall.

I know, sadly I only made it to this location in the summer and winter and the time of day always left me longing for better light. I really should have just went up by myself but always went with people and nobody wants to wake up as early as my funky but. Now I live in Florida and we have virtually no hills . Hope to be back in the NY area soon and get up into the hills. Good luck finding the proper 135mm.

I've used some 135's and they're mostly good, something about the design that makes for sharp lenses. Do you need a fast lens or will a slow one suffice?

The OM/FD f3.5 weigh only ~300g. I love my 135L for sure, but for travel, I think not, it's too big and heavy. Either 135/200 would work, do own both and prefer 200. If you decide for minolta, tread carefully, there are many versions of them, the one you want is the 4 element design, should be 560g, so somewhat hurts the portability argument. Similar aperture stuff from canon FDn can be had and only weigh 395g.
