Hey, it seems that a lot of my wedding clients just stick with me and kind of become like friends and hire me for their future milestones as well. Same with my senior portrait clients.
In this case, I shot Maurice and Laura's engagement session and wedding three years ago before I really established myself and raised my prices to their current level. In terms of a wedding, it was pretty much low-end financially. But in terms of emotion, it was hugely high-end. There was just so much fun and love, that was definitely one of the weddings where I fell in love with wedding photography.
Last year, they contacted me to let me know that they decided to try to adopt a newborn baby and in creating a profile from which expectant mothers would pick them, they needed some killer lifestyle photos. Instead of just taking them of each other on their phone cameras, they wanted me to do it. That was a lot of fun.
A couple months ago, they contacted me to say they had indeed adopted a baby and now they wanted family pictures. So I brought them into my studio and I wanted to do some shots with them standing and holding the baby. This pose is really one of my favorites with babies, where the dad is kissing the mom, and the mom is kissing the baby. In this case, Joshua was just watching me the whole time with those huge beautiful eyes. In my studio, I shoot tethered to a monitor, so once I got the shot, they opened their eyes and looked... and both of them just started crying. It had been such an arduous journey trying to have their own child, and then just hoping someone would select them for an adoption, and then it happened. And the love they felt for that child was just amazing. And here it was, like my 10th frame of the session and I'd captured how they felt toward that beautiful baby. Their reaction is why I love doing what I do. That I get paid is necessary and it's awesome but I don't think I'd love photography as much as I do if not for moments like these.
Anyway, here's their story in my pictures, culminating with that family shot. They told me they want to adopt again, so I'll be expecting to hear from them in another year to update their family portraits.
1. This is Maurice with Laura's brother before the wedding. I asked them to shake hands and look at each other, and this is what happened. This sort of thing happened a lot that day, that's why I chose it as a sample from their wedding.

2. I was the sole photographer that day, so for the procession I'm up front. When Laura shows up, I know I have to get Maurice's reaction to seeing her. She shows up, and Maurice audibly gasps loud enough for everyone to hear. I get the shot of him with his reverend and best man both looking at him rather amused by his typical response.

3. This is what he was looking at, Laura entering being escorted by her brother.

4. First Dance

5. One of the wedding portraits. Aside from doing the traditional portraits, I always like to get some shots that have more of an editorial look to them.

6. Fast-forward two years and I'm hired to shoot their adoption lifestyle shots. Here's a couple of my favorites from that session.

7. And another from the adoption lifestyle shoot.

8. And all that leads to this one shot of them with Joshua. And I don't mean to present this like it's a great award-winning shot within the world of photography. It's not, unless the award is based solely on what the image means to the client. And for that, it wins big-time, and that's what matters to me.
