Any recommendations for a decent flash for events? Is the 43 decent or do I need the next step up? Are any of the knock offs worth the trouble?

I have both the HVL-F43M and the larger F60M. I grab the F43M every chance I get.
I love the quick shift bounce (offered by both models).
I should say that I'm only taking photos of my twin daughters most of the time.
I'm not trying to light up a large group of people wearing dark clothes in a dimly lit area...

I use the 43m. Don't get the 43AM, as it is for the older shoe. It's a pretty good flash.

I own the 43m and 60m and f20m. Godox just came out and I am so floored at how cheap they are. For about $125 you can get a GN60 flash thats compatible with optical and radio (Sony flashes are not compatible with radio at the moment with out adapters). There's no reviews on them yet, but I'd wait a bit and see how they perform.

I realize there are many options for flashes, several of which I've tried. However after recommendations from a knowledgeable professional whose opinions I've had good fortune with. He recommended when I sent a Nissin back, a HVL-43M. Stating primarily it was designed by the same manufacturer as the body I use (a A7RII) and as such not only had the features but "compatibility" worked out at the design level. I trusted him on this one and once getting it rang it out. I was so very pleased with the amazing quality exposures it cranked out, the size, build quality and especially that unique Sony rotating head function, which when rotated down and placed toward the back renders superb exposures that do NOT look so "flash like" but provide such excellent coverage. I can't say enough good about that flash. It has accommodated the largest of rooms I've used it in so plenty of power.

I just received a Godox TT685 for Sony flash from amazon yesterday. The GN is 60 and it will do TTL and HSS. The cost is a fraction of many other brands at $119.00 and their new transmitter and receiver will be out next month!!
The beauty of this is that no adapter is needed, the flash actually mimics any big named brand with the build quality. Super excited!!

I have a yongnuo 560 iii, as long as you don't need ttl, and hss, its a perfectly fine manual flash. I don't shoot events often, but did use it at my friends wedding. This flash is definitely provides enough light imo.

I use Nissin i40. It is small, powerful, with HSS. Nissin is releasing i60 soon with about the same size but a power of 60 instead 43.

I have a pile of Yongnuo 560's for playing with off camera flash and they are great for that... But at events, I like TTL. I feel like Sony cameras are fiddly enough without having to mess with the flash.

I think I am just going to dogfood a Godox and see how that goes. Ok, it's not my dogfood, but it's still a fairly beta product. I have a month to work with it before I need it, so should be ample time to test it.

A2Rob, can you post back on how it goes with your flash?

When I worked at Microsoft centuries ago... it is verb-able.

Verb

dogfood ‎(third-person singular simple present dogfoods, present participle dogfooding, simple past and past participle dogfooded)

(transitive, computing, slang) To use (programs developed by oneself or by one’s own company) as end users.

You’re dogfooding Longhorn [a version of Microsoft Windows]?

Ah, that explains it. Telecom would've adopted it had it been an acronym.

+1 for the Godox TT685s.
As far as I can tell (I have 3) it's up there with any camera makers flash for a fraction of the cost.
Now the savings you make with 1 might not help with your retirement. But you can get multiple flashes and then the savings really add up.

More importantly, you might actually get multiple off camera flashes: and that's when the quality of your flash images will pick up!

The Godox version of Sony TTL is still new (I'm waiting on my TT685S so can't confirm anything) but the Godox system is great. They are the only company offering anything close to an ecosystem that goes from mid-sized strobes (TT685) to 600Ws studio strobes all with TTL and the same wireless trigger system. Of course they offer even more powerful strobes if you are fine with just manual.

I've been using their manual LiOn flashes for over a year now and love them.

Godox also has a TT860 TTL speedlite, the Sony version will be available in a month or so.
It is the same as the TT685 but with a lithium battery. The benefit is no external battery pack required for faster recycle and more flashes.
