The phone solution deserves a careful look. I use GPSLogger on Android. It's actually excellent. Fire it up before you head out and it creates a trail that you can sync to your images in Lightroom with a few clicks. There are lots of apps that do this, but this one is powerful, simple and free.

Taking a shot with your phone and setting it to record location is also a good approach. I have to do that as a matter of course because all my lenses are adapted to Sony A7/A7r cameras, and I don't get EXIF information. I like to know what lens I used and the aperture, so I use Google Keep (another free apps). I take a shot of the scene in Google Keep, and make a note on the photo; the GPS coordinates are recorded behind the scenes.

Of course, this only works if your phone has a decent GPS, if it's getting a satellite, etc...

I usually drive or hike to one location for my shooting so the easiest way to add GPS location to my RAW files is to take a picture with my phone at the exact same location.
Later on in Lightroom, I copy the metadata (Camera info selected) from my phone image and paste it to all my RAW files taken at the same location. It's very easy and fast and does not drain the battery from my camera or phone.

I've started taking along a Nikon body with an attached Solmeta gps. Takes up the hotshoe space, but Solmeta's internal compass is much more accurate than the ones in the di-gps and Aokatec units.

If only the D810 had a tilting screen...
