Crickets...that's all I ever hear when I've asked for directional GPS for sony like the canon unit. Sure wish some company would offer a solution.

There is a unit for the Canon 5DIII and the 7DII and I guess it works on a couple of others. Slips into the hot shoe and works great. The same thing for the Sony would make me happy.

Why not https://itunes.apple.com/fr/app/motionx-gps/id299949744?mt=8 ?

This is a cheap (€2) application that will allow you to record your track on your smartphone. Once recorded, you can send the track via email (on my photo dedicated iPhone without email configured, it works!) or get it via iTunes.
Once done, you can use the track file to synchronize your shots and GPS locations in Lightroom. Just keep your camera to current date time to easily synchronize both.

Canon's hotshot mounted unit immediately tags raw and jpeg files not only with GPS but also with camera direction. This is valuable data. But it seems only a very few on this forum want that data. My message to Sony is that they should just do this for me. ☺

i too would like sony to offer a gps unit, small, hot shoe mounted with it's own rechargeable battery system. i had and used the canon unit on my 5d3, and i have a handheld amod3080 unit that i've used for several years along with jfreidl plugin for lightroom, but the disadvantage of this method is that it only can store so many hours of track log, so on longer vacations i am forced to take along a laptop and download daily so i can then tag the photos with the track log. it is far more convenient to be able to tag as taken. unfortunately it seems that the amos units are no longer available, which is a shame as they only cost $69, and one lasted 3 years and the replacement is now 4 years old

I would like a GPS for my Sony cameras. If you could pop it into the hot shoe and get both the jpgs and raws tagged, that would be nice. Directional data would be fine too.

I wish Sony was more responsive. I do a lot of petroglyph studies and while I do not want to give the information out on exact location, because some people actually destroy petroglyphs, I would like the info tagged to my images as I take the image.

I had Nikon and Promote GPS units in my Nikon days. When I switched to Sony, I missed having that capability.

But out of necessity comes invention. In this case, necessity became adaptation. I started using smartphone GPS tagging apps. They could not be simpler or more accurate, take very little time, are ALWAYS ready to go (no waiting for a separate GPS unit to lock on), and much less of a hassle than an outboard unit. Plus, they don't add to the bulk of this small camera.

Upshot - if Sony were to make a GPS unit, I wouldn't use it.

But it doesn't automatically tag each image. You have to go back and do this, is this correct?

Yes, that is correct. Most of these apps have companion PC/Mac apps and work with Lightroom and several others.

It's a painless process, once you know it. To me, it's a small price to avoid adding a clunky appendage. If you use your phone's GPS, it will alway be locked on. Even indoors, if you have cell tower triangulation you can still get a fairly accurate location.

What app do you use right now?

Sony had a GPS unit in their a65, a77, and a99's (I think the a77II, but not sure). They decided it wasn't a very used feature and went with wi-fi instead. I do know that the a99II has a pretty elegant solution that it uses a pairing with cell phones. Perhaps this will make its way to the a7 lineup through an app.

Coincidentally, these instructional videos were linked on SAR today:

Android:

iOS:

Haven't tried it, but it doesn't look like an elegant solution. Seems like my phone battery would run down, and it's not clear whether the GPS link would get re-established automatically after either the camera or the phone is powered down or goes to sleep. I'd like an in-camera GPS, personally; at least the option. I figured the problem was that battery life is skinny already, but I can think of other reasons Sony hasn't added this feature. You can bet that it's somewhere on their product road map.

The lack of GPS (or any third party options) was what I did not like about Sony when I purchased my A7Rii. I was so use to geotagging my photos using Lightroom and GPS in my 6D, that I practically started to question my decision using Sony.

As a workaround what I do is to take photos at the same locations using my iPhone and then copy the GPS coordinates and paste them into Lightroom. Far from ideal solution, but worked better than the other solutions which required an app running in the background for coordinates and then emailing etc.

That quick and dirty smartphone trick has another benefit - reminds me of the scene context and where I set up the tripod.

Hm, since smartphones all have built in compass, I wonder if it is possible to include the azimuth in the tag?

PS. I also miss my 6D's geotagging.

Glad this popped back up. And I'm sure Sony is waiting to hear me beg for this again. Canon's little gps unit is now years old...drum roll...and they recently issued a firmware upgrade for it! That is some serious service and Mr. Sony it might just be indicative that they're is latent demand for a similar Sony product. I would pay 400 bucks for it maybe even 500 so you're leaving all that on the table. The magic features are directional data written directly into both raw and jpeg files alongside the other gps goodies.

Unfortunately, Sony only supports one model (ILCA-99M2) with the playmemories solution (http://www.sony.net/pmm/btg/). It would be great if a firmware update to the A7r2 made it work as well.
