Caracara are part of the falcon family yet they seem to more scavengers than active hunters.
We were fortunate to see three different members of the caracara family.

1 Mountain Caracara....seen around the guanaco carcass

2 Southern Caracara-we saw many many around the kill but also on posts and along the roads as well as quit a few flybys.

3 Chimango Caracara...this one was hanging around the lodge we stayed at

Thanks so much...I found your info so fascinating that I Googled it and spent some time reading about the research into avian relationships....very cool! So falcons and hawks/eagles have more convergent evolution than they have any close genetic evolutionary relationship.

The extras from your trip sure make for great viewing Eric. A have assembled fine set of Cara Cara orange images, er... caracara images.

Oh yes, birds are my strong suit...NOT! Yes, I will be running a Colombia hummer tour once I can get my future son in law to ask his aunt how many people she can fit in her house
