p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · First week with the 500mm

After almost four years of photographing birds, I finally got my dream lens, the Canon 500 II, and it does not disappoint. Got it last week and have had a few opportunities to go out shooting. Here's a sample of some of the photographs I've made so far. All taken handheld with a 6D. Haven't gotten a tripod or tele-converters yet. From Central Park, New York Botanical Gardens and Bear Mountain.

This leucistic Common Grackle made me do a double take at first because it reminded me of an Oropendola at first.

You're off to a good start! The BGs make the subjects stand out nicely.

The grackles are very nice but I love the white-throated sparrow in the second post the best - great detail Thomas.

New toys don't always equal great pics but the big whites certainly help. Nice work on these, Thomas. Get the converter asap. Unless you are a weightlifter the tripod is a necessity, IMO. Another, IMO, a Sidekick style gimbal should work just fine with your lens- it does for my 600II.

Thanks, everyone for your kind comments. I got the 1.4x teleconverter yesterday so I'm psyched to start using it for warblers!
