p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Problems with installation of PlayMemories Apps

Today I tried to install some of the PlayMemories Apps on my A7RII. Sadly I experienced several problems and had no success.

First I tried to install the apps from my Mac via USB cable to the camera.
Problem: there was no connection established between the Sony software on my Mac and my camera. I tried three different USB settings on my camera: mass storage, auto and MTP. All three failed (although with different error messages).

The firmware update from my Mac via USB to the A7RII worked flawlessly. Therefore it's just a problem with the PlayMemories SW.

By the way my Mac runs under El Capitan 10.11.3

Next I tried to install the apps directly from the camera via WLAN connection. The WLAN connection was successful as was the login in the Sony App page on the camera. When I confirmed the buying of the app nothing happens, no next stepp, no downloading and no error message. Just the same page with the confirmation button.

Any ideas? This is really frustrating.

I have the same issues. There was a thread here recently that had multiple complaints about the same issue. It seemed that Macs do not work whereas for some Windows was more successful as was directly downloading to the camera. I have never been successful.

What browser were you using when connected to your Mac? I found the only way I could get apps to install successfully was to use Safari. Chrome didn't work for me at all.

Just my 2 cents.

I used this article as a starting point. Like said previously, try using Safari.

Boris. I had the same frustrating issues after following EXACTLY the procedure that you have described above. I use Safari as default and Chrome as backup - it didn't work via either when connected by USB.

The way I solved the issue was to first go on the Sony site and buy the amount of credit (with MasterCard) I needed for the programs I wanted to buy. Then connected my A7r by WiFi and it was a smooth process to buy and install.

I just read this article and especially the comments.

Here are some examples which 100% confirm my experience:

Any work around if running OS X 10.11 (el Capitan) ? I have tried the USB -> MTP and LUN -> single/multi but nothing works.

The playmomoriescameraapps site just gives me one of the 3 different error messages depending on which USB setting I have applied.

I can't seem to purchase the app straight from the camera either, it just becomes a continuous loop on the 'confirm purchase' menu (click, loads, returns to that screen, repeat, without ever buying the app).

...

Just found this post on the Sony Support Forum which answers the issues with those running MAC OS 10.11 and issues with PlayMemories:

"The Mac OS 10.11 is currently not supported with use with Sony cameras and camcorders"

This was the only suggestion I found to solve this problem:

I found the solution for this issue. Pay Pal and credit card dont work even after we register. What we need to do is buy a Play Station prepaid card for a value of 10$ and add it in the wallet. Once added select the credit card payment method as default then buy the application and the money is taken out from the play station prepaid credit card. I just tried it and it worked for me. Look like sony is only allowing SEN or Play station prepaid card which you can buy from local store

(all quoted from the above mentioned site)

I'm not sure I really want to go to a store and buy a prepaid Play station card just to get my apps on my camera running. Crazy!

If there is no other way I will probably get an external timer for timelapse shooting and forget about all the other apps.

Have you tried purchasing the app from your computer but downloading it from the camera over WiFi from the PlayMemories store? I've never purchased an app so I'm not sure if I'm correct in assuming it will remember the app purchase on your account and make it available for download from the camera over WiFi.

That would be too easy. If you try to buy an app on their web side, second step is connecting your camera and if this fails you are not able to finish the buy.

Any other ideas?

This may not help, but do you have access to a PC to do the install? I've never had an issue with Windows 7/8/10 and have installed the app on many Nex cameras and A7r bodies

I'm afraid this doesn't work anymore. My last Windows PC is gone since last year. We just have three Macs in our family.

I made a thread about this a few weeks back and I don't think there was a single reply.

Windows 7, Chrome, all drivers are/were good. Nothing.
Later, using the horrible in-camera store, same problem as above- the stupid loop.
I guess I'll try doing the Playstation credit thing?
I want to get the timelapse app.

If you try the Playstation pre paid card thing or find any other solution please post your result here in this thread.

I still haven't found a solution.

There is now a thread on dpreview about this topic. A lot of people are having the same problem and no solution:

One advice on dpreview was to wait at least 36 hours after a failed attempt to download an app.

I tried it again today (3 days after my last attempt). The connection of the camera via USB cable from the Sony website was still not possible but at least the direct download via the camera connected via WLAN finally worked today. I changed nothing compared to my last try but today there was no endless loop.

At least I can confirm now it is (sometimes) possible to download an app without buying a Sony prepaid card.

Sony should urgently improve their playmemories website otherwise they will clearly lose customers.

I wouldn't ditch Sony altogether over something like this, but I had essentially given up on the apps

Mac os X 10.10.5 and new Sony a6000 owner here with my two cents. Desktop v of PlayMemories loaded with no apparent issues to my MacBook Air earlier today. Went to load the first 50 or images from the a6000 via the kit USB cable and it was a epic failure. As with many, went and downloaded the "wireless auto import" app and introduced my network to the camera and wireless uploads were then successful but painfully slow. I can in turn import from "Pictures" to LR and go about my business but if I try and simply open one of the images directly, an oldish software by the name of "Colorstrokes" opens with a half BW, half scrambled version of the original image. Sony should be flip'n embarrassed over this. The a6000 will likely go back to the store tomorrow for a full refund. what a disappointment...

I just download the apps through the camera. You can purchase on a phone or tablet, too. Once you have paid for them, it is easy enough to download through the camera.

Not to sure why so many are having problems with App purchases, just use your camera WIFI, once your credit card is registered its so easy. I just added a number of the apps to 3 Sony cameras with no issues (A7II, A7rII, a6300). Once you buy an app it can be used 10 times on different models, you just enter your user email and password, sit back and watch it load up.
