p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Quail and other flying wonders

Want to share some of the bird shots I've taken in IL, MO and NM.

As a child growing up in Santa Fe, NM, my grade school teachers introduced me to blue jays in coloring books and other printed media. I had never laid eyes on a real blue jay until we visited my wife's dear mother in Lee's Summit, MO several years ago. I was amazed at their beauty. I know some see them as mean and cranky, but all my eyes saw was the gorgeous plumage they wore.

The cardinal was part of a 500 image group I shot on a cold, snowy day in Chicago.

The quail that wonder around our property here in southern New Mexico require full camo to get close to. You also need lots of patience and must keep an eye out for the rattlers.

The hummingbird was part of a 1000 group shot (or so). While I really love seeing what I 'caught' when taking a look at a days worth of shots, they critter's require your full attention if you hope to be successful.

I came across female turkey while poking around the back of my dear mother-in-laws backyard which was really just a small forest. She chased after me because she had a brood nearby. I was fortunate to have taken the shots I did before she chased me off. I really miss Mom's backyard.

Here are the rest of the images.

My one regret withe blue jay was that he never displayed this crest. I am still puzzled by that.

Some may not believe this, but we had two hummingbirds that wintered with us. How they survived is a mystery to me, but they did. The day after Christmas we got 13" of snow and they acted like it was just another summer day. I have no idea how they kept from freezing.

All comments are most welcome.

Nice variety of birds in this set. The first quail and the hummingbird are my favorites but all are well done.

@Heron

Thank you, gentlemen.

I will gladly accept praise for all save the hummingbird image. That was pure luck as anyone who has ever tried to photograph these flying gems will attest to.

Thanks again.

The hummer is my favorite, Phillip. Undoubtedly, there is always a little bit of luck involved with taking a great photo – but most of the time, it's down to skill, planning, and experience.

Thanks to all of you for your kind words.

@Morris
While the cardinal may have looked cold, I was frozen.

@Socrate
There must always be a LOT of luck when shooting hummers.

Setting up the gear is a no-brainer, but waiting for these mini-rockets to fly into you DOP zone can wear a fellow down. No pain, no gain.

@KCollett

Thank you for your kind words.

The hummer was pure luck. While all nature photography is a joy, I have yet to capture a family of quail with their babies in tow. They take a bit of patience to photograph and you never really know who will show up when you set out to shoot. Bunnies seem to always get in on the act.
