Crappy title, I know, but nothing else meaningful came to mind.

You know, I am positively humbled every time I see drop, dead gorgeous images posted by incredibly talented photographers who post their digital gems within this forum for all to see and enjoy. Speaking as a web developer, image theft drives me absolutely nuts, but the bottom line is that if someone really wants to grab an image that he has no title to he can do so with no reprecussion at all. That sucks. Big time.

There are ways to overlay a clear PNG and that helps prevent theft if the perp is not too savvy. IMHO, there is just no bona-fide way to prevent image theft. And, yet, all the FM uploader's (myself included) do so without giving this a second thought.

Yesterday I came across Tony Markle's INCREDIBLE hummingbird images in this forum. This led me to his forum where each and every image that I saw was watermarked. His images in this forum were not. I found that remarkable in that I think he is saying that he trusts everyone in fm.com and not anyone who visits his website. I understand that. Perfectly.

Speaking only for myself, I never have a second thought when I upload an image within these forums. Nor do I ever concern myself that someone might rip off one of my images. Today this struck me like a brick and all I could think of was - Wow!! I am not a behavioral scientist, but I think this is really amazing if you think about it a minute.

When I used to have a lot of my work on one of my website's they were all watermarked. One day some lady ripped me a new one for watermarking all of my images. I can still visualize her yelling at me, "You are totally obscuring the image which makes me not want to purchase it. Do you think we are all theives?" Now, she was either very sincere or she was a sly fox trying to force me to remove the watermarking so she could rip off some images. I have no idea where the truth really laid in that matter. I left the watermarking as it was.

There are some image theft 'tools' that may or may not work. Some of these are DIGIMARC, TinEye and AdvancedPhotoTools.

https://www.digimarc.com/application/copyright
https://www.tineye.com
http://www.adptools.com

I have no experience with any of these, but was told that some lady sued (and won) someone who ripped off her images and now lives quite comfortably from her use of Tineye to catch the perp. Whether that story is true or not I have no idea.

Bottom line: Fred has built an amazing forum for all of us to enjoy and be a positive part of and somehow we instinctly know that trust is what binds us together. I feel truly blessed to be a part of this fantastic community.

While my words may sound a bit corny, I meant each and every thing that I wrote.

Phillip Anthony

P.S. I was not quite sure where to post this thread, so hope it will be okay here.

Some people think that the tools of crime should not be made public but I do. How can the honest person otherwise protect henself? The Appelsoft Corporation and The Villans Thrust Consortium has now put the ultimate tool in the hands of Webmasters of the Darkweb. Screenshoots! Take a screenshot of a 4K screen, trim the borders and you're golden!! No hidden EXIF or ANYTHING to expose you!!! Just the image itself...

@artificialyello

I hear you. Screenshots are childs play for image theft.

Once a user opens your webpage the image is on his desktop and depending on his expertise he can do as you mentioned or grab the actual image at full rez. I once saw how an overlay of a copyright image would come to life if a perp tried to drag the underlying image to his desktop. While that does work, it is weak protection at best.

It would be very cool to embed code in an image that would 'phone home' if it were saved to an unknown ISP. As I understand it this cannot be done which is probably a good thing because hacker's would use that to their advantage. Again, it's a win-lose situation - they win and you lose.

All you can do is keep the rez low if you're really concerned about being ripped off. Or post at full rez and not worry about it.

Thanks for your comments.

@artificialyello

One good use of being able to grab an image off of a webpage popped into my head.

Years ago I was having some issue with post processing of an image and some guy grabbed it from the webpage, tweaked it and posted it back on. That is probably the only good feature of being able to remove an image from a webpage and NOT ripping it off.

I'm actually quite okey with people downloading my pictures as long as they don't "recycling" them without asking nicely...
