when the ribbon cable is properly aligned & inserted, there is very little resistance to close the locking strip. if you have difficulty closing the locking strip, then recheck the ribbon for proper alignment and insertion.

try taping a long strip or two of scotch tape to the black tab & cable to aid with the cable insertion. take some fingers dexterity in such tight space, but you can do it 😊

I really like the idea of taping something onto the thinner tab to get it into place. I think that will work great!!! Thanks!

I used tweezers for the ribbons, the best method I could find.

You can also find really nice bamboo forceps for a reasonable price. They work well and are gentle on flex cables.

I wanted to add to this thread that I ended up buying a small roll of 3M VHB tape from Amazon. It's made for bezels. It is double stick, thin, has a texture almost like putty, and gives some water resistance. It worked GREAT for attaching the bezel to the LCD. The trick was to cut extra thin strips of it, stick the strips to the back of the LCD around the edge, and slightly stretch it while applying so it was even a bit more thin than it already is. It needs to not overhang the edges at all, or the bezel will not fit right (you can pull it up and reapply if needed). I made about 4 attempts before getting it right, then it popped together perfectly. I let it cure overnight under a small stack of books to get even adhesion, and voila, it looks factory perfect. I have been using it a week or two now and that ended up being the easiest part of the repair.

And if anyone needs some, I'll sell the rest of my roll of it cheap.

Monkey fingers and stupidity is more like it. In the end, I wish I'd left well enough alone!

I took almost no pictures. My hands were too busy at each step to manage a camera and make a useful picture. Just don't do it. Huge PITA.

I feel your frustration here ! I have now replaced the LCD's on my A7s and A7rII and each time the labor cost was 110 AUD and about 1/2 day to complete locally. The new screen from Sony in Australia is about 150 AUD. There a few DIY projects that would drive me crazy and this would be one of them

p.s. i vote for the creation of a DIY forum for helpful threads as such. of course there would have to be disclaimer of "use at your own risk and no guarantee implies" 😊

+1

Something like this could have saved me the nearly $400 and two and a half months it took Sony to replace the LCD on my A7R...
