Got the RX1R II finally, yesterday. So far VERY impressed by the quality. Battery life I would say average. I managed to get around 250 show on a single battery, uncompressed RAW+Jpg (18M), mostly LCD only.
Did some comparison versus a7r+35mm f/2.8 and I'm blown away by the differences. It's not just a matter of sharpness (my copy of the 35mm has been sent to Sony for optical issues and returned back in a superb shape) but really a matter of overall quality. So far it remembers me very much my loved Rollei 6008+80 planar, but at ISO 3200 it's like the Rollei at ISO 100. Incredible machine.

Now some questions on how to carry it. I prefer a suit so that I may have the camera without any additional pouch...

1) I have the Gariz for the a7r and don't love it as it is not a big protection. So will not buy GARIZ again. Somebody uses the LCJ-RXH? http://www.sony.com/electronics/cyber-shot-compact-cameras-cases-covers-straps/lcj-rxh. Looks big...!

2) LIM Elzo (found on eBay) Anybody tried it?

3) Wait for Ulysses... Looks like it's a nice project going on

4) Forget about the suit and go for the FotodioxPro Grip only

Would love to hear from you,

Z.

I bought the LIM case from ebay.

I can suggest it more than using the Gariz, which I also own for the RX1 classic.

Full coverage of the left side of the camera.

The grip adds much needed ergonomics WITHOUT adding much bulk like the RRS grip+plate (which I also own for the RX1 classic)

Back and bottom.

Now. Unlike the Gariz, the LIM case is made with one solid block of aluminium for the base and the leather surrounds it. Gariz, on the other hand, seems to use sheets of plastic and then use a metal bottom.

The LIM case is heavier than the Gariz case and it adds a very nice amount of weight to the RX1R II. I would say that the LIM case is the best combo of grip + case. The price of the new Gariz case for the RX1R II is way too much, I think, for what you get. I wanted to get the official Sony case (because of the access to the side door and the now flush bottom) for the RX1R II but it was out of stock across N. America so I couldn't get it anywhere. I thought: why not give the LIM case a try since the price is reasonable. I don't think I'll look for another case, now. It really is a great blend of the RRS grip+ Gariz leather protection. The leather is real and of good quality but it is not as thick and you imagine a belt or something similar. JnK of Korea also makes a great case for the RX1 and I wish it was more functional because the JnK is beautiful and can be ordered in bridle leather (which is amazing) but no access to the battery/card door makes it too much of a luxury and not functional enough.

If I was looking for a case today, I would buy the LIM again. I never liked the Ulysses stuff because I don't think the look is sleek enough and the fit seems a bit loose but not as tragic as the Italian Luigi cases that seem to have dropped the ball already...

Highly recommended.

More photos to compare Gariz and LIM.

I love the Gariz for this one, always enjoy the smell when I get it out of the bag in the morning - smells like victory. For me, it's only to add some finger purchase at the base, and still permits easy access to the card and battery. This is first edition RX1. Doesn't look as 'special ops' as above, however, lol.

I really enjoy the thick leather and handmade quality of my Angelo Pelle case on my A7r. They have one for the RX1 ..not sure if it will fit RX1 -2? .. you will have to research.

Is there a reason why no one (except Sony) makes the top half of the case?

"Black Ops" and "Smells like victory",.... been watching Apocalypse Now recently?

My original RX1 is more black ops, though...

Gonna do the same to the R2. Problem is, the initial layout I have for the RX1 is not the same for the R2. The focus switch is not at the same distance to the lens (lens seems to have been moved further to the middle of the camera) so I need to adjust the initial cut.

Top plate tape on the original RX1 is also taped because I do not use the flash at all, so thought there would be no point in having that hole open.

Since I only use manual exposure and never change modes, that dial also taped. The exp comp was also taped up but that fell off...

Ended up getting the FotodioxPro Grip... The half case covers just a small portion of the camera more then the Fotodiox Grip and would add some useless (IMHO) weight to the whole package.

I used to use the RRS bottom plate + grip with my Mk I...it didnt really fit properly when i got the Mk II (it does fit, but sits kinda slanted and not flush with the camera base which will drive anyone with even a little OCD nuts) but then RRS released a Mk II base plate and i'm rocking that setup now. Not a half case per se but still the best setup IMO (for me at least). The grip is built like a tank, all the compartment doors can open, and the tripod mount base plate function is extra icing on the cake

I just got an RX1R II and am debating to grip or not. I want to go with a half case or grip largely just for protection of the base of the camera, but am unsure how 'necessary' a grip is with this camera. In holding the camera it's hard to tell if a grip like on the Lim case or the Fotodiox would actually be comfortable or add that much utility? The RRS looks ergonomic and like it would actually function as a grip but I'm not sure I want to add that much bulk and weight to the camera. This is a totally open ended and subjective question so I guess I'm just looking for opinions on if anyone went with a smaller type grip like the Lim or Fotodiox and found it more uncomfortable than the unwrapped camera?

For anyone with the Lim case — is the grip comfortable? The Fotodiox looks a little more ergonomic and molded to the hand.

It is comfortable. Then again, comfort is a matter of taste.

I believe you'd be splitting hairs between this and the Fotodiox. The major difference in ergnomics would come from something like an RSS grip or going the micro way with the Gariz case which has a small lump for a grip.

I have the RRS w/grip on one, and am trying the Gariz on another.
The RRS stays on one all the time. This camera is part of my working kit.

The other is my travel camera. I can't get the card out of the camera through the Gariz case opening without tweezers.

I am currently using the Think Tank Mirrorless Mover 5 as a protective case.

I would like to find a functional full case.

There's a trick to getting the card out with the Gariz case.. Just lick your fingertip slightly and you'll be able to reach in with that finger and have enough grip on the side of the card to pull it out enough to get two fingers on it. It becomes really easy once you learn that.
