p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Male Dancer

A young dancer I did a shoot with last year asked me if I would do a "contrasty black & white" series for him. He wanted to do it outside in a field, which was far from the best of locations, but I was able to isolate him from the background pretty well with my 135mm at f/2.8.

Overall, I'm more pleased than I thought I'd be when I first saw the location. A couple of these poses don't look like much until you realize how much he was straining to hold them... and then think about how my 51 year old body wouldn't stand a chance. The jumps were fun, and there were a couple other good ones, but I'll stop at five.

C&C on the processing is welcomed. This is the first B&W portrait session I've attempted, although I've tinkered with a few individual shots in the past.

Nice, but in most of them the pants are too black. A little detail would help.

I agree with Elliot. Last one is fine though regarding details in the darks.

Here's a little different take on one of the other jumps. This one brings out more detail in the pants. In the earlier ones, I was content to not have much detail in the blacks because the pants weren't my focus, but I see the point of the suggestions.

The blacks don't bother me. Nice job!

I see Elliot's point on the pants, but to me the pants are the last thing I see in these shots -- maybe because they're so dark! I'm fine with the dark pants.

I like these overall, especially as a set. If you're interested in C&C beyond the processing....#5 is my favorite, more because he is having a fun rather than obviously straining in the position. Maybe I'm spoiled by some of the ballet shots on the forum, there is something further impressive in the graceful, relaxed facial expression when pulling off these difficult dance moves/positions.
