Looks like a feathered torpedo skimming along the surface of the water feeding on something very small. I think it was algae.

Teal can filter out and consume very small seed bodies or invertebrates. It is likely eating Chara sp. seed bodies (technically not seed because Chara is a calcerous macro algae looks like table pepper in the crop) or stuff like Daphne sp.

You should have both species of Whistling Ducks in your area.

see below for photos from these sites (I think this is how we're supposed to credit pictures takers)

These are great ducks to shoot for the camera or the table. These are not my pictures and come from the referenced websites.

Yes, I have seen and photographed them a long time ago. They were called Tree Ducks then.

They are still tree ducks. When I lived in TX we called them squealers.

If you do a little scouting and figure out where they feed (they start well after sunrise unlike other ducks) you can set up and echo their call right back to them and they'll change direction and come right to you. If you hunt, they are the very tastiest meat you'll find anywhere in the animal kingdom.

Up until a few years ago I was an ardent duck hunter but I have some health issues that affect my balance. Thus, I'm a menace to myself and my fellow hunters, so I have quit. Sold several duck boats, gave my shotguns to daughter and her husband. I never shot a tree duck. I've photographed them. They aren't all that common in AZ.

A unique perspective on this teal; I can imagine it did look torpedo-like!

Thanks for posting.
