Well, we've all been here, got to start somewhere. I like the composition and the environmental concept, it's a great idea and a rather striking backdrop. But...
The lighting is awful. You need to get some fill on the subject's faces. A reflector or off camera flash would do nicely. A lot of folks find the idea of using a flash in bright sunlight to be absurd, why do I need extra light in broad daylight. Well the reason is because the sun is so strong it creates large dynamic range problems in the shadows. Like here for example, never mind that the hat brim is blocking your view of the eyes, you couldn't see them anyway because of the shadow. So, my first suggestion is do some reading on lighting. Then practice using your speedlight off camera. You'll be amazed at how much that simple addition will improve your portraiture.
My second critique is that these guys don't seem very clear, maybe that's down to reduction for the web, but the whole frame looks a bit fuzzy to me. Motion blur maybe?
This could be really good, it's a neat concept. Get that light tamed to where you want it and let's see how you improve.
Edit: hmm, the tone of the above may be out of bounds, I read the title of the post above yours and clicked on your post. You are clearly not a "first timer." No offense intended. The critique stands, however, the faces are rather poorly lit.
