I want to get a 77mm ND filter for for outdoor portraits at wide apertures. I think 2 stops should be enough for me but am not sure. (My D750's max shutter speed is 1/4000 as you know.) Looking at B&H there are a few options: a Hoya, a B+W and then a more expensive Hoya with multicoating which seems to be a good thing to have.

I don't have any experience with Breakthrough Photography's filters, but there are guys here that do.
From what I've read, I would give them a hard look. You can read a review here.

I use a B+W ND 77E 0.9 8x (103) 3-stop ND filter. I also have some Kodak Wratten gel ND filters cut to fit inside the B+W filter, if I need more stops.

I have 2 BT X3 ND's. they are more then worth their price. 6/10 stops. of the ones I have have used they have turned out, as they have adverted, to be the most neutral.

I'm using Hoya Pro NDs (2, 3, 6, 10 stop) and highly recommend them over B+W (I had their 2, 3, 6 stop NDs). Two reasons:
- The B+Ws were not "neutral"; all were slightly warm (not a biggie), but worse, they weren't the same shade of "warm". Two were slightly warm and the third had a different tint. All of my Hoyas, and my Tiffen VND, are all visibly neutral and the same color. I can't attribute the B+W colors to storage or use, as all of my filters are kept in light-proof wallets within my camera bag except when in-use.
- I find the Hoyas fit better on my lenses. I've never had a jam with Hoya Pros or their HD CPLs I use, whereas my B+Ws jammed a bit too often for my liking. I'm aware of the common wisdom that "brass rings are better", but that just hasn't been my experience with the 10 B+W "Pro" and 12 higher-end Hoya filters I've owned.

I wish the Hoya Pro NDs had slightly thinner rings, but with the selection I have, I rarely want to stack filters.
