I've really been enjoying shooting candid photos with slower shutter speeds and zone focusing.

Going after motion is always a fun challenge. Lots of shots here ... some work and some don't

3, 5, 8, and 12 work really well

11 and 15 work moderately well.

The rest either don't work or have compositional issues

I really like the idea of playing with motion! It's one of my favorite ways to breathe life into still images!

I try to follow one main principle when doing this: something in the frame has to be relatively sharp. I try to accomplish this by panning your subject or a really slow shutter speed with blurred subjects and a still/sharp background.

You did well with most of your panning efforts! Good job!

Chuck

That's interesting, those images are probably the ones I like the least. To me, it's more about the expression and being in the moment - sometimes a perfectly composed image seems "canned"(?)

Thank you for your feedback.

I was simply commenting on where the depiction of motion was well done and not detracted from by compositional choices. As Chuck said, something in the frame has to be in clear focus (not blurry) and that becomes the key subject or the backdrop (one or the other). Blurry images are just that, blurry images; most of the time they don't work well. #9 is a notable exception to that generality as it clearly has an impressionistic feel to it.

Like or dislike of an image when the subject is personal to us is tainted by our emotional connection. That does not devalue the image for you, but it may explain how/why others may view the image differently.

One other thing of note: Some shots may be great shots, like #14, but the lack of background blur does not make it a great motion shot.

For what it is worth, my favorite shots, are 3, 9 and 14 with 11 and 12 getting honorable mention.

I dig these. All of them. Perfect skin and sharpened eyes are no substitute for real life

they are your personal images; so go for whatever work for you & your family enjoyments for now and for the years to come :-)

just like home or vacation movies, they are treasured for their historical references.... mostly by family members

These look like the photos I delete from my iPhone. You should check out the family photos of Chuck Anerino. He has documented the lives of his children--always in motion!--with extreme skill and grace.

You can get some great photos like these when you view your children as individual human beings.

This is a wonderful themed series. It's glimpses of people living life and having a good time. These photos are in the tradition of one of my all time favorite photographers, Jacques Henri Lartigue.

I think as a series they all work well together and like Chuck said there is life in these. Yeah kinda like the young Lartique without all the money. Have you even seen the motion work of Ernst Haas? Again as Chuck pointed out there is some life in these. Well done.

BTW I think #11 is killer and a great explanation point in the series. I can almost smell the chlorine and feel the water.

The series actually has a bit of a flow to it the way it's laid out now. Might be different in a book or in a gallery space but works here.

Thanks for the kind comments! I will definitely look more into the photographers you guys listed.

I am inspired by Daido Moriyama - not necessarily for his look, but for the way he puts the moment ahead of technique - kind of "by any means necessary".
