G'day all,
A couple of head shots for a local business.
Second time I have done some work for them.

They have a couple of new employees and needed some photos for them. Today i shot one and Wednesday I have another.

First a couple of shots from the first shoot I did for them. These were done at their offices, I'd rather shoot in my studio any day.
I did post these when I shot them and received some great feedback, especially about arms been crossed.

Today's ones. Shot in my studio in literally 10-15 minutes. Totally different lighting.
In the ones above I had a light camera left and a another behind the camera for fill, also a strobe on the wall for background light.

In the ones I did today I went for a butterfly lighting. One large softbox above and a reflector below. On the gray ones I also used a speedlight on low power.

The results

Any CC is welcome as I will use the same set up for the second one.

Bud

Hey Bud. In the first it looks like he is leaning back from his torso and the added lean in his head seems to make this more pronounced. Some of the others display similarly, but do not include as much length of torso. The second I would crop above where her jacket is flaring out due to her cross-armed position. The wrinkles in her clothes (some vertical and some horizontal) below make her look a little frumpy. No. 3 of the second group would be my choice.

The shots in your studio are 10x better than the original shots, so they're really going to be happy with these. Agree with Douglas about the posture of your most recent shoot. When I remember, I try to get them to breathe in and then lean forward. The breathing gets their shoulders back.

I really like your lighting decisions on this most recent shot. One thing I do differently is to tough up the highlights esp on the forehead so you don't have those bright spots. That's just me, though.

Interesting to see the gray vs the white background. I have a spot in my soon to be opened studio that will be dedicated to headshots, and I originally was just going to have white and black backgrounds, but now I'm thinking I need to add gray as well.

Sure the clients will like.
1: Not fan of the "fig leaf" hand position. Not really a corporate look. Could crop.
2. Interesting and like overall look. Not a fan of heavy shadow on women. More of a mans look. Tone down the bright hand as it pulls attention from face. I would crop just under arms. Too much gathered fabric showing.
1 light gray. Too much body angle for a man. 2-3 are a better body position.

I agree with Elliot. Get in tighter for headshots. And Ron, do include a gray backdrop for your headshot clients. 90% of my headshots are now done on gray. And I don't light my gray backdrop. The frontal fill takes care of that, while my key/fill ratio is pretty tight, meaning no discernible shadow on the backdrop. That makes the gray backdrop uniform across the image, rather than vignetted as many are.
