Getting this egret was a bit of a problem for me. I was photographing some dark ducks in the wetlands so I had set +1 exposure compensation. And suddenly I noticed this egret in flight. I completely forgot about the exposure compensation and took a bunch of shots. While processing, I was horrified to see the whites all blown out but luckily for me, I was able to pull back the highlights in post on some of them. This was one which had the most pleasing wing position.

That's an issue all of us have faced at one time... I usually leave exposure compensation set at -0.3 and adjust quickly with shutter speed until I can reset exposure comp. Nice job on recovering some detail in this shot, I like the wing position and the BG is nice.

This is why I like to use manual exposure and it's very quick to change the shutter speed or aperture. I tend to set the aperture and adjust the shutter speed 2 clicks (2/3 stop) to compensate when I see a white bird.

Morris,

I use manual exposure too but I also had auto-iso on. So although I upped my shutter speed, the ISO climbed too.

Kirk: like your idea of keeping some negative comp dialed in. Lifting shadows in post on the D750 is virtually noiseless, so I should try that strategy.
