I dont have my 5D3 anymore (sold it to fund the A7RII) but the shots I took with the same lens on the 5D3 are fine but my A7RII ones are not. Also when I took the test shots in my OP with 3 different lenses I didnt remove the metabones adaptor. The other two lenses are fine so its not an IBIS or adaptor problem.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, Ive pretty much gave up on the lens now though

I did not have a problem with all my other lenses that did not have a floating element or it was not very obvious apart from the 24/3.5 TS lens. The problem is exactly the same as the one I had - see here with download link in the original post

Bloody hell...I had this infinity focus problem with Fotodiox adapter. Canon lenses could not really reach infinity. 16-35/4 did but it was only in the middle of the image where it happened. MB4-T fixed this for every lens I had and didn't think of the problem later when I purchased 24mm TS-E MKII. The friendly shopkeeper agreeded to take the lens back eventually as it performed so badly.

It could well be that while 17mm TS-E performed better, it would shine with shimmed adapter? Is this Metabones QC problem or are all MB4-T units flawed?

I've been shooting with both the Canon 24 and 17 TSE since I got my first A7R and now the R2. The 17 is definitely sharper in my experience. My 24 performs fine but I have to be very careful with focus and check all corners for focus when shooting. I think the problem is when I focus too far away in the center of the image, it causes the edges, (especially the left edge), to be soft. Don't ask me why it's only the left side - doesn't make sense. Before I purchased the lens I rented at least six of them over a few month period and they all seemed to have the same issue. I thought it might be my metabones adapter or camera, but no other lens has the problem. I live with it and make sure to check focus carefully and the images are perfect. I try to always shoot at f11. The 11-24 f4 and 24-70 f2.8II are both sharper in my experience so there is certainly no benefit to using this lens over one of those if I didn't need shift capabilities. BTW- I always focus manually through the viewfinder and disregard the focus scale on the lens barrel when on the adapters, as they are not even close in my experience. I have not, however, done any exhaustive testing, only shooting architecture on a weekly basis. So my comments and observations are based on that.

YMMV.

I asked about the IBIS just to rule it out. The adapter is the issue, this has been discussed extensively on FM. Floating element lenses are tuned to reach focus at a very specific distance from the rear lens flange. I would shim the adapter, you can use copper foil, or even aluminium foil to achieve a proper infinity setting. Non floating element lenses typically rack the entire focussing group back and forth, so they will achieve focus on a short adapter. The floating element trims focus to the rear focussing group and it works differently.

This is where tinkering stops for me. I will not void my warranties by stuffing shims into the MB adapter. Should I badly need the wider TS-E:s I will get 5DSr for 'em. Canon seemed to up the game with 1DX2 for the sensor so maybe 5D4 comes up with tilting screen.

I wouldn't mess with the metabones adapters unless you verify that it's the issue, as it may screw up all your other lenses. Have we established for certain that these issues with the 24 TSE aren't present when used on a Canon body? I will try and do a comparison later this week on one of my 5D3 bodies, but it may not be as obvious on that camera as everything is softer and of course resolution is lower. What's needed is for someone to test the same lens on the 5DSr body.

So I shimmed one of my metabones adapters and yes, it does fix the issue on both the 17mm and the 24mm. I may have shimmed too much as I'm getting tack sharp 3m+ Focus right into the extreme corners, but I'm still having a problem obtaining flat field of focus. The bottom corners aren't alined with the middle of the frame. For example, I focus 1m in into the central frame the coners about of focus till the 3m mark.

MMkay, how did you do the shimming? If it is simple, then I may think about it. Do you have to tear the MB apart or just the mount piece?

I need MB shimming guide for dummies + info on materials, gonna have to use ebay for those I think.

Curious here too since I am planning in getting a TSE in the same system.

Shimmed with 3 layers of 0.1mm stainless steel foil under the Metabones mount. This has fixed most issues on my Canon TSE 24mm (I'll post before and after @12mm shift tomorrow). I tried 4 layers, but it made the mount very tight.

BUT there are issues on my Canon 17mm TSE, yes the extreme corners can be put into focus, but it drastically increases field curvature, so much so that It creates more issues than it solves.
But I have another metabones adapter, which I luckily picked up for $100 and I'm going to give it a try with 0.1mm and then 0.2mm shim.

I encountered a different but perhaps related issue.

I used to use my A7r to focus the 17mm with tilt only using the zork standard on the lens that allowed the lens to be mounted directly to the tripod head. I would then remove the a7r body and mount a sigma SD1 (modified with an eos mount. On the a7r to SD1 the register remained perfect. On the A7r2 the sigma is consistently out of focus. I attribute this to the beefier flange on the a7r2 which I think has subtly changed the register. On af lenses this won't matter but on floating element lenses it may and that beefier flange may be the root problem. MB should probably redesign the adapter if the register has changed.

I would try using the TS-E lenses with the new Sigma adapter MC-11. I'm sure Sigma machinery has much better tolerance. I just had too many issues with Metabones QC.

I use a tse 24 Ii with a metabones iii on a lowly A7r 😂. I don't recall seeing any such issues, but I'll retest when I get a chance.

Unrelated, but do you use the adapters L bracket to mount the tse on a tripod or just the bracket attached to the camera body?

Cheers

I replaced the adapter bracket with the custom L bracket made by RRS for the MB adapter. It allows me to keep the camera body L bracket on for other lenses and is more robust (but bigger) than the L bracket and spaced I'd been using on the metabones foot.

Yes, A7r1 gave me noticeably better performance with 17mm and 24mm TS-E lenses using non-shimmed MB4.

Thanks. I have been using the bracket more like the one pictured above, but find it fiddly getting in the way of the TSE knobs etc. The RRS one looks much better and not too expensive!
