I decided to make the pilgrimage up to horsetail falls yesterday, hoping to get a little bit of the action. I've been wanting to head up a few years now, but always seem to have the most work during this time of year. Well I decided to go in between work assignments, working late on Monday night till past 11pm. I decided to avoid any LA area traffic and head out around 5am the next day, arriving around 11am at the Valley floor. I headed to scout out some locations first, and found 10 people already setup on southside drive. I ended up leaving my tripod there and finding camp before looking around for different angles.
It is good to have a few people there, you get to talk and it makes the time go by faster, but it does become an overcrowded attraction, which I do not really usually like. With 3 hours till sunset, there was easily 100 plus people there and I decided to get another view, so I headed up the valley to find a little higher elevation, and less stuff in the way in case I wanted to go wider.
First shot is a view from where I was, with some nice rim light on El Cap, and the second shot is my favorite. There is just so much wind and nice golden light.
I ended up waiting and seeing the light fade, and because I could see the horizon, I knew the sun was hiding behind a few clouds. I ended up getting a little sad, I just made a 12 hour round trip journey here and couldn't get the light show. But soon after, the light began coming back, the crowd down below began cheering and we saw a glimpse of what could be a spectacular lit waterfall, instead the wind, the light and everything didn't match up perfectly for a truly epic shot. But overall, I am happy and glad I at least got to witness this in person.
