"Glow From the Other Side"

Some nights can be very surprising when out under the stars. This particular night a lovely fog rolled through the valley across from the Paradise parking lot at Mount Rainier National Park to add an interesting element to this photo. The Milky Way core is seen rising over the Tatoosh Mountains above the massive yellow glow of light pollution from Portland, OR about 70 miles away. I used my Nikon D750, 24mm F/1.4, iso 5000, and 15 seconds.

Thanks for looking,

Matt

Awesome shot. I have seen a lot of milky way photos, but I love the composition here. Unreal.

Glad you hear you enjoy the photo! I too am very pleased with how this one turned out. I will never forget how cool it was seeing that fog in the valley. Incredibly special to see.

There is lots to like with this image, the fog enveloping the mountains, the light in the FG trees and of course the Milky Way. The perspective distortion is a bit distracting, but I love the shot...

Hey Matt,

The shot looks really good, everything but that yellow glow on the horizon. Even if that's the way it really looked in person, I would suggest toning that yellow down. But for light pollution from a city, I would have thought it would have been a warmer color anyway, more red/orange in with the yellow.

I think the light pollution really adds to the photo in this case. But I do agree that it would be better if it was toned down a bit.

I know I commented on FB, but I really like this image man! Processing is very well done. Light pollution is always the enemy but you did a nice job here.

Light pollution can be a killer, but it's overcome by the fog and the lit foreground so to me it adds to the overall scene.
I usually shoot 14mm and also uwa panos of the stars because I want to capture everything, I really like this at 24mm, well done.

Beautiful. All the years I lived right next to this it makes me sad I didn't go shooting here. Agree yellow could be toned down, the milky way is really the all the star of this photo for me.

Great shot. I lived in the area for 5 years and never got to see it like this, let alone capture it. Wonderful job! But wondering what the light source is for the trees in the right foreground...

Glad you enjoy the photo! The fog was brilliant to see. I did apply lens correction to this shot, so if you are referring to the main tree in the foreground I believe it was just tilted like that on the hillside. Shooting at 24mm there was minimal distortion (compared to my 14mm ha). Thanks for taking a look and commenting.

Thanks for commenting Jim. I agree the yellow is slightly too pronounced. I will take a look at decreasing the saturation. The humidity in the air that night really make for a crazy light pollution glow!

Glad you enjoy the photo! It really is amazing how moisture in the air reflects light pollution from even 70 miles away. I know that many sites show light pollution even up to 200-250 miles away, insanely bright lights!

Thanks for looking Clayton. I agree about toning down the light pollution. I will try my hand at reducing this! You definitely need to get up on the mountain for some night shooting. The park is almost always empty at night, so you will likely have the place to yourself. Out of my entire 3 months there, I maybe encountered another night shooter 4 or 5 times. There's a lot of room to explore!
