I thought you might like to see how well the 5DSR can handle BIF and how much the image can be cropped and how much detail can be preserved. Here is Athur Morris blog:

I bet it's pretty awesome for slow flappers!
The 5DS was great for me last year when I rented it.

I've been using a 5DsR for my wildlife photography since it came out. Yes, the burst rate is not as fast as some of the other options — but that isn't the be all and end all for me in this kind of photography.

When it all works out right, it is possible to produce very detailed photographs of the critters, including those that are in motion, with the added advantage of being able to crop significantly if necessary — and it often is necessary with wildlife.

To the skeptics, I am not claiming that the 5DsR is the Absolute Best Wildlife Photography Camera Ever. But it is very good, especially if its strengths line up with your particular approach and preferences.

Agreed.

Coincidentally I was in Hokkaido two weeks before Art with a 100-4002 + 1.4x v3 (i.e. max f/8) and had to decide between raw and jpeg given the ~ 12-15 sec write wait after a burst of raw, during the fast action when the eagles are stealing the fish from the cranes at feeding time at the Akan centre At this point I decided soaring eagles and the like are good for raw because they are so slow they are almost not in flight, while for action sequences switching to jpeg was more productive, although no faster for sequences but rather for time between consecutive sequences. I was getting about 5 fps. I'm still working on a sequence of shots (about 3 seconds) of a fight between a sea eagle and a white tailed eagle where the latter has the former's bill in one of its claws (will post soon in Wildlife forum) - I would not have been able to get that had I been shooting raw just before they went at it The lighting was fixed and I already had the exposure set well. More of my more photography is (stationary) landscapes so this is not an issue and I shoot raw, of course. Now, if the 5Ds could shoot at 5-7 fps AND write a large burst of raw in a couple of seconds, there'd be no need for these compromises, but for now, for me, it's a good combo camera

I've also been getting good results with the 100-400 v.2 plus the 1.4x TC.

I wonder how well the 5DsR would work for flowers n such, macro and close-up shots

I'm getting good results with the 100-400 II, too. But I get spectacular results with the 600 II. The difference between the 100-400 II and 600 II was not that notable with the 5DIII, I think.

Well my 5DsR is about to become my crop camera back-up for my 1DX when I'm FL challenged, thus replacing my 1DIV. 6-7fps would have been nice in the crop modes, but as Dan says, you don't always need the high fps, and the slower rate is kinder to the AF system. Can't wait to put the 500 f/4II and 300 f/2.8 + 1.4 on this beast. I'm going to give it a whirl at surfing too ASAP.

Please post some surfing photos you take with the 5DsR when you can. I'd like to see some heavy crops as well to see how they hold up.

Gladly. Might not need to be too heavy a crop using my Sigma 150-600 and 500 f/4 II + 1.4x III, 1DX holds up very well with 50% crops and only 18MP to start with, so 5DsR should be superb if I time the action right.

Detail and croppability seem to be limited by operator and conditions. Under good conditions:
This guy - Steller's sea eagle, Rausu Japan 2/2/2016 - was stationary and the light was good enough for 1/2000 from a rocking boat. Whole frame

Canon 5DsR ISO 800, 1/2000, f/10 100-400v2, 1.4xv3 @ 560mm Slight Topaz polish from IN-CAMERA jpeg

An example from the 5DSR and 600II + 1.4x. Not that it's a great image, but it does show the magnification and resolution potential. Default ACR settings with light sharpening and no other adjustments

These were shot with a 5DS + 500mm F4 + 1.4xIII...none were full-frame. What I love most is I can print these around 20" at 300 resolution. I love the 5DS!

Wow guys, looking at that blog post and these pics have blown me away. I'm just getting into my first FF camera, a 6D, so for me a 5DsR is not in the near horizon simply because I don't make any money off photography and couldn't afford such a camera, but I'm excited for the future.

For comparison, the following is a similar comparison but taken in 2006 with a 20D + 300mm f/4L IS + 1.4x Mark I. Not the greatest photo to start with but the 100% crop is sad compared to Greg's sample above.

What excites me so much about the current state of things is that back then, this is the closest I was able to get to this kingfisher. If I had the resolving power of the 5DsR I can only imagine just how much more usable a crop of this would be.

Then again, I can now (and will be soon) buy a Sigma 150-600mm lens and get that much closer than I ever thought without needing a huge super L.

Anyways, I'm rambling. Loved to see those 5DsR birding photos. Thanks.
