p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Mazama Ridge Sunrise, Mount Rainier, Washington

Here's a shot of mine from a few years ago (2012) at Mount Rainier. Mazama Ridge is one of my favorite places for wildflowers there, and I try to make it up there at least a couple times every year.

This particular photo has been one of my more popular ones in various showings I've done. I'm getting ready to order a large canvas print of it for an upcoming showing, and I wanted to get some opinions here before I place the order. Any thoughts on the general processing, particularly with regard to the color and saturation? In my initial versions of this one, I thought it had too much of a green cast over the flowers, so I rolled that back a bit for my last few prints. I just tweaked the color a little bit more today. Any thoughts? I'd love to hear what you guys think. Thank you!

I think in looking at the light on the peak, overall it is a little too cool......but it is a very nice shot.

Hi Kris,

What an incredible variety of wildflowers in that location! You have me wanting put Mt Rainier on my list of places to shoot this year. There is something so cool about Mt Rainier that's hard to put in words, but with photos like yours, words are not needed.

What month did you shoot this?

Jim

Oh, btw. The color balance looks good to me, I think that cool color works really well with greens and colors of the foowers. Warming it up more would give the greens an odd feel I think.

Thank you both for the feedback.

Thank you for the kind words, Jim! I completely agree about Mount Rainier, and I intend to shoot it as much as I can this summer.

The photo here was taken on August 18, 2012. In most of the last few years that I've been shooting the wildflowers there, mid August has been the best time. This last summer was completely different though, due to the low amount of snow and early melt. I think it peaked at the end of June, while I was in Iceland, and I didn't get a chance to shoot it before the flowers were gone.

I'm assuming 2016 will be a more normal year, hopefully with a great bloom. If you decide to shoot it this year and would like some company on a Saturday or Sunday, let me know! I live about two hours away, so it's a pretty easy trip out there for me.

Beautiful image, Kris. You stayed on the trail to get it, I hope...

Thank you, Phil! This was taken right along the main trail through this area. I always do my best to minimize my impact whenever I'm on trails in this area, and the fact that this trail goes right through some spectacular fields of flowers makes that quite easy.

Perfect capture here Kris. This looks like the scene I saw at Rainier this past summer when I worked there as a park ranger. Just amazing all the variety of wildflowers. Really attracts some brilliant photographers such as yourself. Beautiful work!

Thank you, Matt! I'm consistently amazed by the abundance and variety of wildflowers on the mountain. I can't wait to shoot it again this year!

Looking great!

Mt Rainier is awesome and huge. No photo put it into perspective and everyone should go there and see this beast in person! My dad climbed many routes on it over the years (like 30X or something) and I got to play around here as a kid. No wonder I am crazy about landscape! Thanks for posting it.

Thank you! I agree completely about this mountain. Going there is always an amazing experience. As much as I enjoy photos of Mount Rainier, experiencing it in person is a whole different animal.

A great shot as is, I love the colors, composition, lighting, well just everything about it.

Just curious ... did you use lens tilt or focus blending to achieve the great depth of field?

Thanks,
Don

Thank you! This is actually a single exposure without a tilt-shift lens (specifically, I used the Canon 10-22 on my old 7D). I just did my best to focus at approximately the hyperfocal distance. The flowers are sharp, but mountain is a bit softer than I would like when I print it large. If I were doing the same shot these days, I would definitely have focus stacked.
