As everyone knows this place is shot more than any place in Colorado. It is an icon for good reason, but it can get crazy there. This spot is considered better for sunrise and it gets very busy. I tried to shoot it at sunrise once a couple years ago and I didn't even get a spot along the lake due to it being full. Literally the whole lake shore is shoulder to shoulder photographers in the morning during peak fall colors. If you come for fall colors and especially if it is the weekend I highly recommend getting there 30 minutes to an hour before sunrise.

This shot was taken at sunset when things are a little calmer. Went there to see if it would be worth coming in the morning and since it was past peak and there was no snow I decided to sleep in.

It is strange when one goes to a beautiful place with like minded people and everyone wishes they were mostly alone, there are exceptions, but most photographers have very individualist tendencies and usually like to operate alone. The frustration comes from trying to express ones vision with a crowd who's all trying to do the same.
Dave, your take-a-way is unique and quite beautiful, I like the mood and the last bit of color in the clouds, a great rendition.

^ What he said.

Very nice image!

Many landscapers want to be individualistic, but become sheep because, quite simply, the average person doesn't have the time or resources to travel and be unique. We have entered an era also in the last ten years where, between digital imagery and the internet, there are no longer any secrets. So, people have to make choices. And a poor choice would be to travel 1,000 miles on your vacation to a place unknown to you, and then look for something new while disregarding the icon. So, there will always be crowds at the tried and true icons.

California -> Colorado -> Utah -> Patagonia -> Iceland...
I'm curious, where is the next big thing?

A very nice shot, the spattering of color in the clouds is very nice.

As for sleeping in the next day, I would say you made a mistake. I don't know why you decided it was past peak, that one small area where the leaves have fallen off always goes first. Which means when they are yellow, the rest of the trees are mostly green. So there is nothing wrong with a small area of trees with fallen leaves. And as for the snow, you had snow. The definition for there being snow at Maroon Bells is when the lines on the Bells have snow, and you have those snow lined edges on the sides of both Bells. Sure there could have been more snow, but you had plenty of snow to help define the Bells.

Anyway, wonderful shot here and sunset is a great time to shoot there.

Nice, most shots make the mountains more prominent, your shot presents the entire landscape...very nice. Camera/lens??

Its not just landscape photography...
When Union Pacific rolls out the 844 Steam Locomotive, there will be thousands of people out chasing and photographing it.
When the National Weather Service issues a tornado watch, there will be thousands of people out waiting to photograph the tornado.

You just gotta be true to yourself. If its something you are passionate about, great, go photograph it. If you are doing it because everyone else is, eventually you will get burn out and give up.

I have been to the Bells twice. Its an extremely beautiful place. However, the main reason I think its so photographed is the access to it. You are 10 min outside a major tourists destination, all paved road, and you park 50 yards from the lake. There is literally NO "adventure" to get there.

thanks. I decided to sleep in due to a few reasons. I was being very picky because this was at the end of a week long photo trip to the San Juans and Crystal mill(photos posted soon). My wife met me in Aspen for the weekend so I decided to sleep in with her. If snow was in the forecast I probably would have gone.
The other reason I am not keen to go there in the morning is people can get very rude and I saw a fight there. It kind of kills the mood for photography.

I had a similar experience a couple years ago at the lake shore. I got there about 20 minutes before sunrise and the lake was full. I decided to walk in different areas and take some pics of difference scenes. When i was leaving I wanted to get 1 shot of the typical shot. I had to ask 4 different people if I could squeeze in for 1 shot. Every single person got a little nasty and finally a person let me move in for a single shot.

As a full time professional photographer who has lived about 10 minutes away from those famous peaks for nearly 20 years, I can't say I agree. I photograph them every year, but I now almost never shoot in the corral by the lakeshore, blows my mind how rude photo enthusiasts have become in getting the same darn shot the other 150 people are. And every year without fail, I get highly salable shots that are unlike the ones I got the year before and they earn great income, often on black and white film that I hand print.

So no,

Well, that is what why I posted what seems to have been deleted. There is a lot of pressure on our beloved wild lands in recent years and if we don't put our best foot forward as photographers, we will lose more than we can imagine.

I attended a meeting last night with the Director of the White River National Forest and some of the metrics were pretty sobering.
