I photographed these dunlin sandpipers on Jones Beach about a month ago. The patterns they created on both the sand and in the air were fascinating.

Very nice Morris. I love the second and third, but those frame filling shots are also awesome.

Thank you Frank,
I just came in from filling the bird feeder. That was enough outdoors for today!

Morris,
some of these are really spectacular. While I like the simplicity of the 2nd image, the 4th really stands out. The patterned flight with vertical wings is very unique.

nice work,
bruce

Great looking flock shots Morris. Whenever I try that, my focal point finds a way through and the horizon is in focus, and the birds not so much. Well done.

Still going? The sun has warmed it up to 0f and the sustained wind is down to 16 MPH

Thank you Bruce,
They are in that position in the 4th image as they are banking to turn.

Thank you Ken,
I don't think a single focus point will cut it with a large flock. I use Nikon's 3D color tracking. On my older cameras I used closest subject.

These are spectacular...absolutely love the in flight shots...how you pick out one to focus on is beyond me !
Stay warm....even the snowy owls are sayin' "If I wanted this friggin' cold I would have stayed in Canada!"

Thank you Eric,

I don't know if Canon has any type of group focus setting. Nikon has a few to chose from. I use 51 point 3D color tracking which works something like this: Place your center point on your subject or let the camera hunt for the closest subject. It will then lock on that subject using color and contrast to stay on the selected subject. It works so well in a situation like this all I do is point at the flock, compose and trip the shutter which I do as I see things I like. Some people would hold down the shutter release and blast away.
