I am considering getting a 1.4 teleconverter for my Sigma 120-300. I have both Tamron and Sigma 2.0. I am wondering if I need the Sigma 1.4 on it or will a Tamron or Nikon 1.4 work on it? Thoughts?

Also, I would like to hear from those of you that have used this lens with a 1.4x on it. How did it affect the focus speed? Was the lost of IQ major or minimal?

Never cared for TC's on the 120-300's (had the 2 prior and demo'd an early Sport)
AF took more of a hit than I liked (rodeo requires instant lock) IQ wise the Sigma 1.4
was pretty good...if you don't mind losing a stop or so. Some folks might not be as picky,
but the REAL beauty of the 120-300 is f2.8 (Nikon TC won't work w/o some tab grinding)

Thanks. no tab grinding for me I mainly thought of using the 1.4x for football this fall, but I'll probably just shoot it on the 7200 or the D500 then. I love it on my D750 for hockey.

I know someone who uses the 120-300 sport with 1.4 converter for night football and really likes it. Send me a pm and I'll send you the link to many photos done with this combo.

the nikon is a no go with mod needed and money wasted
wouldn't put a Tamron on when a matched dedicated one is available from sigma.

why do you not just get the appropriate 1.4x 1401 TC from Sigma. i use it and it works quite well. it is dedicated to that lens for me. the 1401. your 120-300 s may/most likely will require a firmware update (v1.02) to work correctly together. it will nullify use with the older TC's

I had the tab removed on a Nikon TC14Eii to use on my 120-300 (2nd version, not the latest which may require the new Sigma TCs). It doesn't affect its use on Nikons in the slightest. However it was not as good as the Kenko, which was much better on the Sigma.
However I'd go for Sigmas own TCs, they are very good. I used the 2.0 and it was excellent.

I've run the sigma 1.4x on my 120-300, and I love it. It gives a pretty great focal length at a nice aperture (168-420mm f/4). I'm running the pre-global vision version (the EX OS version), and I've never had any issues with AF speed, consistency, or seen that big of a hit on image quality. I talked to a Sigma rep, and he told me that the lens design is the same for the EX OS version and the Sport version, so results should be similar.

Here are some shots with the Sigma 1.4 converter and the 120-300:
