p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Red-tailed Hawk with it's kill

My buddy and I watched this Red-tailed Hawk launch from the low branch of a tree and snag an Eastern Grey Squirrel for lunch. I was amazed at how close it allowed us to approach without flying off. It refused to leave the kill and appeared to be quite comfortable with us as close as 12-15 feet. I was able to slowly move around to get an unobstructed viewing and shooting location.

These were taken with a 5D MkIII and 100-400 v.II

All of my shots (yes, there are more) were taken around 250mm - 270mm.

All this hawk wanted is a good portrait for its facebook

These are real nice. Love the background that so easily camouflages the hawk. As you had said, nice combo of 5Diii and 100-400 II. (Well, the person behind the gear is more important than the gear).

Very nice set. I can't seem to get within a 100 yards of these birds before they take to the wing. Well done.

Super shots... WOW...

We need more of those hawks here on Vancouver Island to clean up the abundant Eastern Grey Squirrels that are wrecking havoc around here!

Great Work, Harvey and thx for posting

Well done!...
This species is so skittish around here. It looks like hunger and protection of the prey took priority over the typical flee instinct.
The tight portrait and look-back are my favorites in your set.

Thanks a lot, George. I can only assume that this bird has gotten used to people.

Thanks a lot, Bruce. I've seen this behavior before. Once they make a kill, they are not quick to abandon it.
