p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Birding Trip to Florida

Hi All -

I'm thinking of a late March birding trip with my wife to Florida, and was hoping I might get some advice from folks on this forum for best birding and bird photography places to visit while there, and whether late March may already be too late in the season, etc. Will happily take any and all advice

Thanks!

Nagi

You have picked the best time of year to come to Florida for bird photography. I am in the Orlando area, so I'll start here.
Gatorland is a commercial tourist site in this area, with hundreds of giant alligators in a natural environment. Birds like to nest in the area, and a boardwalk right thru the rookery lets you get very close for excellent photography. They offer a photo pass, so you can get in early. beating the crowds. This is a must for the best experience. In St Augustine, there is a similar setup called the St Augustine alligator farm. Both are sure fire places for world class bird photography.
Over to Tampa, there is Ft Desoto nature reserve out on a southern peninsula in St Petersburg. Shore birds along the beaches.
Going south on the Florida gulf coast, there is the Venice Rookery. It is in Venice florida on Annex Rd off Hwy 41, near Jacaranda Blvd. Annex Rd is only a few blocks long so you can't miss it. Drive past the Hwy Patrol facility, to where the buildings end and look on the right for a covered, open hut. Park and walk just thru the hut and you will see the rookery where a variety of birds are nesting. This is a morning site.
Further south on the gulf coast. near Ft Meyers, is Cape Coral. Burrowing Owls nest all over Cape Coral, and you can google the location to see the best places to look.
Keep going south on Hwy 41 till you get to the middle of the state, and find Shark Valley Rd. This is a fantastic place to get great closeups of many of the Florida birds, nesting and fishing. A morning place only due to light. Shark Valley is a paved walkway along a water retention swamp, the northern boundary of the Everglades park.
Get Arthur Morris' Birds as Art ebook on Florida Birding for many more sites to visit.
Good shooting.
Mike

Note to aboulenein and joanvines

You can't better advice! Plus there are neat little spots along the roadsides + parks along the way.

Happy Shooting & Enjoy!

I have just returned from a month in Florida and I'll second going to Fort Desoto beach and Gatorland. At Gatorland the Great Egrets and Snowy Egrets were nesting and the boardwalk gets you at eye level to the nests. If you are a Veteran you can get in free. On Thursday and Friday you can get a special photo pass to get in before everyone else does and you'll have the place to yourself (with other photographers). And don't miss the swamp walk!
Also I like Lake Louisa State Park for its Gopher Tortoises, Red-shouldered hawks, Swallow-tailed kites, etc. (I actually saw a cottonmouth there too)

If near Palm Beach / Boynton Beach, I've had good luck at Wakodahatchee Wetlands and Green Cay. Both get pretty busy with walkers / non-birders, but lots of subjects.

I love Everglades National Park. Two faverate trails are:
- The trail along the canal at Shark Valley
- The Anhinga Trail - Boardwalk with birds so close you may have to back up to focus. Alos lots of gators.

Sunrise and sunset at both are special. Bring plenty of repellent and water

have a great time,

Morris

It would help to know where you are staying. Florida is big if you try to cover to large an area.

I have been to both the East and West coast, and they are both great. Have you decided on a general area? This will make it easier to recommend locations.

...and what species you'd like to see? Some are more local to certain areas of the state.
