p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Getting ahead (strong warning of animal predation)

From one of my favorite sightings in which a leopard, jackal, hyena and lion all were seen within 100 yards of one another. The jackal actually made the kill which is highly unusual but it was the lion that ended up with the spoils. A very young impala turned out to be a snack for this lioness..and nothing went to waste.

Strong image. Poor impala and the life goes on.

Well done Eric. Hmmm - could this be another definition of "face-off"? ~ Ron

You've had your fair share of cool sightings on your many trips, so for this encounter to be one of your favorites is really saying something.
Powerful image for sure my friend... well done.

Ron?

The picture tells the story Eric. Maybe not always easy to see but Nature does just fine taking care of itself without us interfering.
Amazing close up!

It was amazing to see this from about 15' away...we stopped shooting for a bit to allow for some video and the audio of the bones being crunched is cringe worthy!

Thanks Harsha...the realities of the natural world as you know so well...one dies so one can live...Darwinism at it's finest.

Thanks Kirk...the actually devouring of the impala was really secondary to what played out minutes earlier with the multiple predators all vying for a seat at the table...the queen of the jungle obviously took home the prize.

Thanks Karl.. you are correct my friend.....the brutality of nature is not something all of us want to see either in person or in photos but it is part and parcel of the natural world and despite our feelings it will continue.

...as the head literally explodes...It is not easy observing and photographing something die and be consumed but these cats just do what they do to survive and if statistics are any indicator...they are not doing well at all.
