p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Organized wildlife photography trip to Costa Rica?

In 2016 I want to go to Costa Rica to do wildlife photography. I'd prefer to go on a trip with a group because it would be fun to meet other photographers and talk shop and compare notes. I'm definitely looking for a trip dedicated to photography, because if I'm the only serious photographer in a group of random sightseers, the others won't have the patience for me to set up a good shot. I'll probably rent a 600 f/4 for this, so big tripod, no "grab shots".

Does anyone have any experience or recommendations for guided wildlife photography trips to Costa Rica?

If not, then can anyone offer advice about hiring a private guide who's an experienced naturalist for a solo trip of this type?

Thanks in advance.

I bet that FM member, Glenn Bartley, will have some tips on Costa Rica: http://www.glennbartley.com/photoworkshops/Workshops/CostaRica.html

Thanks for these links. Has anyone been on any of these trips and could they comment on them? Are there any good websites to hear a personal experience? I thought about TripAdvisor, but they don't seem to like questions about organized tours.

I haven't visited Costa Rica (yet ) but I believe that Glenn has a superior knowledge on what and where to photograph. He has been there many times from what I've learned over the years. Browse his website and visit his FB page to see what people say about his tours. Also, try to contact him: http://www.glennbartley.com/photoworkshops/contact.htm

Todd Gustafson photo safaris. I've not been on a trip with him but I did shoot with him in Bosque for a few days. Would not hesitate to do a trip with him. He's very focused (!) on getting excellent images.

If I was going to go with a group on a tour in Costa Rica it would be with Matt Shetzer. He has well organized trips and keeps the group size to half of what most people put together. He has a trip focused on hummingbirds this coming year and he is going to the same area we are going to for our own trip this year. He does an excellent workshop in Alaska as well at the bald eagle preserve outside of Haines. He tends to have a 3 guest to guide ratio which is very rare.

A tour adds $500 to $1000 per day to the cost of traveling and this is even if you go and hire your own guide for an area. For Africa I would go with a tour group and take the huge hit. Same for Antarctic or the Galapagos Islands. Otherwise we organize our own trips and also gain more flexibility with our scheduling in deciding how many days to spend at a location.

I too am interested in this topic. I do have a list of photography workshops I know some have trips to Costa Rica, I can check it when I'm at my computer. This year I'm going to Kenya and Tanzania on a photo safari maybe Costa Rica for 2017.
