Here are a couple of images I took the other day on the southern Oregon Coast. It was such a great privilege to shoot with a bunch of fabulous NW photographers such as Steven Michael (who alerted me about wave conditions) Majeed Badizadegan (who's work always inspires me) Cody Cha (an amazing photographer in whom I predict a lot more people will be following soon) Jim Purscelley and so many more...
The first image ("Pacific Tsunamic Fury") here needs to be looked at very carefully for scale (see the guy in the yellow rain gear?). This is a single shot with almost no processing (except minor color corrections mainly). It was taken right when we all got drenched with a massive breaker (how's your camera Majeed?). On another forum some folks were talking about how creative or “out of the box” it was. Well, as much as I’d like to take credit for being creative or “out of the box” it was mostly an accident! While grabbing my gear so that it would not get ruined, I just happened to trigger off the shot. Personally, I have never seen such violent surf in my life. Admittedly, I am addicted to the power. Pure chaos. Just bring SERIOUS rain gear!
The second image (Kaboom!") is the classic shot/location. This breaker is near the 200 foot (61 meter) height. The people on the cliff are at 100 ft (for a sense of scale). One must witness this in person to really appreciate the massiveness of these crashing waves. The day kept reminding me of the 4th of July and a great fireworks display. Everyone was oohing and ahhing and no one would go home until the show was over (all day!). I hope to go out again as soon as the conditions are right.
Lastly, I have been getting a lot email/PM/Facebook questions about my whereabouts. Short story: I did 6 straight months, homeless by choice, out of my SUV, leading workshops and shooting. I tried making it though the winter in the SW all by myself, even getting a small log cabin (with good Wifi) to get my business done. But I simply could not take any more isolation! After nearly going stir crazy, I packed up in about an hour, left Utah/Arizona and took a long scenic drive back to the Pacific Northwest. I am so happy to be home! We all know photo trips are awesome but, via a long duration of extreme isolation, I have learned I love people, family, friends and community at least as much. I'll be back on the road and down there for biz in 2016, but for now I could not be happier!
For those who follow my adventures or post processing tips on Facebook (or YouTube) at the link here (at 6:10 in the video) I share a FREE tutorial on Ultimate Web Sharpening.
I hope you enjoy!
I wish everyone a wonderful holiday season. Thank you for looking.
