p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A7ii and Canon STM (40, 50) samples?

I'm a Canon/Sony guy and haven't dipped into Sony FF because of their lens prices. Probably my favorite Canon lens right now is the 50 STM because of its cost and quality...I also love the 40. I'm seeing from Brian Smith's tests that these lenses perform great on the new FW for the A7ii. I also see the WA lenses doing really well too..(not so good on the portrait lenses like the 85 it seem, though). For someone wanting to dip his toes into Sony FF waters this is terrific news...

Wondering if anyone has any sample photos with their 40 or 50 STM on their A72s? Or could comment/confirm this result...Thanks a lot!

Take a look. Many pics taken with the A7 II. Some 100% crops.

I have both those lenses and they both work well on the A7 II. If you are happy with an A7 II body then I think you will be happy with the performance of the EF STM 40 and 50 on it.

Thanks! May I ask how the lenses perform optically, color rendering?

I have the 40 on my 7R and find it to be way better than it has any right to be. Very sharp and nice bokeh all things considered. The FL is a bit of an odd duck though. I wish it were a 35.

Thanks for the input!

So basically on the original A7/A7R I'm going to get the same optical experience with the STMs, but not the improved (via updated FW) AF of the A7ii? I realize the A7r, with its 36mp sensor, may be pushing the limits. I'm really thinking about the original A7.

Question: when I focus by wire on the A7 with a Canon lens with an adapter will the focus magnifier automatically kick in as with native glass (because of the electronics)?

With the MB IV, yes, it does. In the non-AF mode, at least. And the AF works so poorly on the 7R, there's no reason to have it in the AF mode.

I have the 40mm on my A7II and works great. Doesn't feel as quick as on my 6D but when it locks it's very accurate. The lens is sharp and is amazing on the A7II. I'll post some pictures laters.

I appreciate everyone's help on this..Never saw any samples. Did anyone see anything they'd mind passing along? Ultimately, I'm pretty darn happy with my WAs on my A6000, but would love to have a good center-focusing solution with the A72. The 50 STM should AF pretty fast (fast as my 6D?), but seems the 85 1.8 isn't in the cards, correct?

They both perform very well given their respective prices. Colour and contrast of the 50 is good stopped down about 1 stop. The 40 is good from wide open. Colour between the two is pretty much identical and neutral. Bokeh is ok, but not exceptionally smooth. Check out the photozone reviews. My experience matches them, although I am probably happier with the 50 than they were.

Two SOOC EF 50 f1.8 STM shots on an A7 II - Metabones IV T *.

I'd rate the AF as 70% effective.

I've only had this lens a day and like it a lot. Sony's asking price for the FE just seemed unreasonable to me.

FE 55 1.8 $998.00
EF 50 1.8 STM $110.00
Metabones IV $399.00
EF 50 + MB IV $510.00

As a native lens the FE 55 wins handily, but at that cost? Sony are taking the piss just a little.

Canon have always made nice optics, and despite the diminutive price, I'm sure the EF 50 STM will gives years of service.

Time will tell. If I grow tired of the EF+MB IV AF it's no great loss. Plus, the EF tides me over until, perhaps, a nice FE prime in the 60-75 range appears.

Thanks, appreciate the samples and comment. I agree that the 55 seems pretty pricey. Doesn't the fact that it has 9 blades make it a bit more attractive in the bokeh dpt, though? I always cursed the price of that lens until I noticed that.

No doubt the FE 55 is the 'better' optic. It comes down to what you are comfortable spending. IMO, and just speaking for now as thoughts change, it was not worth it despite being flush from recent lens sales. I really am holding out for something different - CES 2016 maybe?

I definitely wont be going the MB4 route just because of the price. Seems -- based on Brian Smith's blog -- that the Commlite and Fotodiox work pretty well, if that not just as well in the AF dpt. I think for AF I'm just mainly concerned with centerpoint. Are you saying it's only 70% effective in centerpoint? Thanks a lot for the help here!

Fotga and Commlite are junk IMO - and I own and use them. Don't believe his remarks re: Metabones vs Fotga, et al.

The unscientific 70% mark was a guess at a difference in usability vs an FE 55 - which also benefits from Sony's Eye AF.

So with an EF 50 STM you're getting about 70% of the AF performance you'd get from equivalent native glass.

I use a King adapter and I am quite happy with it. When I bought it, it had the advantage of being able to AF lenses that Metabones did not, though subsequent firmware updates have probably changed that. It cost around $100. AF seems similar to what I remember on Canon, though perhaps 10 per cent of the time it struggles to lock first go. Disclosure, I have not used Metabones.

Agree that Sony FE 55 f1.8 seems poor value. I don't know how Sony plans to be competitive with virtually no value lenses in their lineup, and seemingly always pricing higher than Canikon with poorer QC.

Well I bought my FE 55 f/1.8 new for $700. They do go on sale and if you buy from Hong Kong you have been able to regularly get them for that price--I got mine from Henry's here in Canada. Next week there is supposed to be a new announcement of FE lenses (rumour is 5 new lenses) I bet at least one will be another budget lens to go with the FE 28 f/2 and the 21 wide angle adapter. Sony will never be able to price their new lenses quite as low as the old Canikon lenses as they have to support the R & D to develop them, but I expect a full line up of sub $500 prime lenses within 2 years.

I wouldn't discount the Metabones IV path that quickly. I have it on my A7ii. I use both Canon EF and Contax lenses that I've adapted to the Canon mount, so all my lenses have a common mount, the Metabones adaptor stays on the camera, I just switch between AF and MF lenses. No issues with the Metabones re AF on my 50 STM. Metabones product support seems good, most recently with their firmware update to V0.47 to accommodate the Sony A7ii firmware update to V2.00 to support PDAF and lossless RAW. The adapter is rock solid on the body and no issues whatsoever mount wise after many lens change outs. I picked my adapter up for $200 AUD on eBay.

Awesome...So seems like it may behove me to wait a bit longer to see what's released at the Sony announcement. I have my 6D currently and while I love it, I wouldn't mind consolidating my gear to Sony. The reason being that I do some video and the A6K is just too good to ignore. Honestly, I see so little difference between it and the A7 (that I had) at base ISO that I sometimes wonder whether the upgrade is worth if if I'm going for anything less than the A7r2 (given that I don't lavish the super bokeh, and seldom need high ISO). Just thinking aloud! But much to consider. I think Ideally I wouldn't need a $1200 used body (a72) and then have to fork over another $3-400 for an adapter. Just a hard sell. So I was considering going with a native 28 and ~50 so maybe we will see something cheaper at the announcement. Thanks!

I was shocked at how good the AF performance was on the 7R2 with the MBIV. With my 16-35 IS and 35IS it's as good as I'll ever need, just sucks that Lock-On and Eye-AF aren't supported. I don't want to upgrade my 7R, but I think I might have to. I was hoping to skip a generation until they get the 4K dot EVF like Leica is using, but who knows when they'll do that.
