p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · More from Central Park

Went back this weekend for more practice. Not much BIF. Had a lot of perched practice Still a lot of fun searching for the birds and photographing them. All shot with a 7D and 400mm f/5.6.

Feeding time! :D

We waited for this red tail hawk to fly off. Our luck it turned around and flew the other way.

Can anyone ID this little guy.

Need help IDing this guy too.

This one too please LOL

Chris, I think you are beginning to conquer the Central Park now.
All the shots are sufficiently sharp and well exposed, and obviously well focused, which is no mean feat for a Shovel duck in flight above rippled water etc.
Excellent job on the owl despite all interfering branches and leaves.
The Mocking bird is pretty too, and the hawk is a beaut.

The natural progression for you I see in trying to get closer to your targets, also shoot them before they hop on the feeder, etc.

Thanks so much Pete! My wife ended up giving me the green light on the 7D I tried the 1D MK II at the refuge. It tracked very well but 8mp didn't give me any room for cropping And it's sooooo HEAVY I learned quickly the 7D MK I can not take much under exposing. This time I made sure I exposed correctly and not rely on PP. It worked! I'm very happy with this weekends outing.

We were pretty close to the small birds. Maybe 15-20 feet away. The larger birds were high up in the trees If get the chance I will get as close as I can

I'm itching to practice BIF but this weekend was a good practice with perched birds and hand holding the camera. Boy, at 640mm the slightest movement is huge through the viewfinder!

Get yourself a Sibley's bird guide...photoing them is only 1/2 of the fun, IDing them is the other 1/2. Euro Starling, mocking bird, House sparrow and Downy woodpecker are some IDs. When you get good gulls become a testing ground for IDs.

Hi Chris,

Your are nailing your focus and producing nice photos. The GHO is a lovely photo with it peeking through the yellow leaves.

What a variety that park has and in the middle of such a big city....cool place....

I second the recommendation of getting the Sibley Guide. I have many guides and the full version of the Sibley is hands down the best.

IDs in order of asking:
European Starling
Northern Mockingbird
House Sparrow
Northern Shoveler is correct
Downy Woodpecker
White-breasted Nuthatch
