Been gone for a bit, but not gone forever (me, at least).

Here's a coneflower plant that didn't get the November memo, and even seems to have missed both the September and October memos with clear instructions to coneflowers: DO NOT BLOOM.

Here it is, November 18, and this stubborn plant is insistent. Both these blooms are still opening - if you look closely, you can see tints of pink around the edges in the second.

Sony a7r, C/Y 100 f3.5 at f5.6, ISO 1250, 1/30 second. Custom white balance measured 6100 degrees Kelvin.

We have some dahlias that still are trying to bloom!

Nice to see you posting David. I like the simple composition of the first one the better of the two. I find the diagonal stick in the second a bit distracting. I do like where the subject lies in both

I also like the first one better. It would be really fine as a stack so as to bring the entire flower into focus while maintaining the flower's isolation from the background. The flowers are positioned nicely in the frame, and the color in the first is pleasant and makes a nice contrast with the background.

Always a nice surprise when flowers bloom unexpectedly . Nice shots and nice to see you posting again.

Thx for comments. Tried a re-do of the first one as follows:

1. Color Balance had shifted to 7700K.
2. Replaced the C/Y 100 with an Oly 55 f1.2 at f5.6 on 14mm of extension.
3. Here's where it gets interesting. I mounted the lens and tube on a tilt-and-shift adapter and was able to get greater DOF by using 12 degrees of tilt. Focus-for-the-far, tilt-for-the-near couldn't quite reel the whole thing in, and stopping the lens down just brought in too much confusing ground clutter, so I compromised a little on the focus distance.

Can't do focus stacks, it is no doubt the better solution. This is my first "successful" shot with tilt/shift. yeah, you're right. There's probably a more productive way to spend 45 minutes.
