p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Barred owl in heavy cover

Finally managed to locate a barred owl at Hagerman after quite a long dry spell. After all the flooding earlier this year it seems their patterns are substantially different at least from my perspective. No doubt the availability of prey species is the key impact on where they might be likely to hang out. That said, this one was hanging out in an area I regularly photographed them before the flood so maybe the pattern is returning to normal. Shot as the sun was setting, backlit in heavy shadow/canopy and spot metered.

Image details - Nikon D4s, 800mm, f/5.6, ISO20,000 1/125

I love the background and natural framing by tree and branches Trey. This is a beauty. I hope things continue to return to normal.

Thanks Morris. The spot where I captured this today was under about 10 feet of water from late May until late August/September which of course drove out all prey species. It has taken some time for all of that to recover and it is clearly still a work in progress. Many huge, mature trees succumbed to the prolonged inundation and all of the understory is dead. Nature is recovering though and slowly but surely the critters are making their way back into these woods.

This is the location where this owl image was taken before the floodwaters really rose back in May/June. This is when the water was about 2 feet deep and it rose another 7 or 8 feet in this area. Crazy to imagine it that deep.

Lovely image owl and all. The bokeh gives it a Tinkerbell/fantasy feel.

For me, the background adds some magic to this shot. Love it.

Thanks! The 800mm really does have a nice bokeh - one of the reasons I shoot it almost exclusively. Easily my favorite lens.
