I found this towhee the other day in perfect spot. By shifting just a little bit I was able to compose the shot with very different backgrounds. The glow of colors was the sun on different colored leaves while the bird was in the shade.

Beauties Tim. I favor #2. I hope something in my mind will be triggered to use the same technique you employed to get different BG's as a result of this series!

Prefer the first one as there is more space to the right of the bird. Still more negative space than is needed and image would be stronger with cropping to reduce it to the left of the bird.
The green background may be natural but to me it looks like a piece of poster board was placed behind the branch.
The Canon 800mm is a superb lens for small birds. Only wish the Nikon version was not an additional $3,300. Nikon does provide a special teleconverter but that hardly justifies the difference.

I like the first one best as the graduated bg looks more "alive" than in the following two images. A great examples to show how important and supportive could a bg. Sometimes we get all concentrated on the subject that we forget the surrounding. So, the lesson to learn is: keep your eyes open to the setting and soon will become a second nature.

Hi Tim,
This is a great example of paying attention to the background. My pick is the first as I like the mixed color and warm glow behind the bird. Super work
