p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A Major Drop In Elevation [+edit]

In summer 2013 I took a 9 day vacation in Thunder Bay and area. Every day was a photo adventure of some sort. On one adventure I found myself close to Terrace Bay so I stopped in to photograph Aguasabon Falls. There is a platform for your typical tourist photo, which I took and got a nice image of but, I still needed to get my own take of the falls. I found some trails and made my way to the top of this huge 100ft water fall. This is definitely not a POV I'd recommend for anyone who doesn't like heights. So needless to say I was using extreme caution with every movement. That next step was not something I wanted to take. I've dreaded processing this image for over 2 years. Due to the extreme angle I used to capture this panoramic image the multiple images needed to be manually blended. I also used AEB and thought I'd need to blend exposures on top of it all. Luckily I was able to use one set of exposures. It still took a few hours to blend and get everything right. I am quite happy with how this turned out.

Hope you enjoy!

For fun here is the spot I was shooting from.

Very nice shot(s) Scott! I give you credit for the creative perspective you went for here not to mention the risk to get the shot. You were working with some tough light there too.

Hope you don't mind but there is something that just doesn't feel right about the composition. I almost wish there were more on the left to show where the water was coming from and a little more of that nice sky showing. Possibly loose the right side up to where the FG angled rock begins sloping down?

Just some thoughts.

Dave

Thank you very much Dave. You've just caused me to lose many hours of my day! I was avoiding processing a larger version of this pano due to the time involved but your suggestions are great and had me reconsidering my original crop. I've now processed the with your crop suggestions and added it to the OP. I think the effort is worth it.

Shaweet! Glad I could offer something useful. I think your extra efforts were worth it!
I'm guessing you didn't have any at the top but I must say looking at the new image I'm happy to have made you loose many hours of your day.

Thank you Dave. I too like the edit more. I wish I could have had more sky. Just not possible. I was shooting at 10mm(crop body) and in portrait orientation. The camera is point down heavily to get this view. If I had FF with a 14mm I could have gotten a little more sky. I may return here one day and try again.

Here is another perspective of the top of these falls. This I processed 2 years ago.

Hey Scott,

This last B&W is very nice. What a cool spot. I do like the pano more then the original, so for my money it was worth your effort to get it done. One of the biggest things for me is it moved the sun beam more to the right in the frame. In the original the sun beam almost feels like it is in the middle of the shot and makes it feel unbalanced.

You need to get back there!

Jim

Thank you very much Jim, Doug and Steve!

Doug, 2 are there because of feedback from Dave so I reprocessed it.

Nice job, Scott. Of the three I like the B&W best. I love that curve in the stream.

Wonderful work Scott! I also like the pano version that you created based on Dave's input...well worth the extra time (easy for me to say!). The black and white is also very nice, but, just to be the contrarian, I'd love to see that one in color too.

very cool shot!

something about the lighting feels a touch off, I think where the beam hits the water and up above in general the bright white water seems barely brighter than the rocks or trees, maybe keep the rest the same but make the water bright as it probably would be in real life with the other parts brought up as they havebeen

I really like the cropped version. The original was excellent but the cropped pano goes beyond that and there's interest all over the shot.

Now if you had another pano at 6-8 secs instead of 13 secs I think 6-8 would have been fine to smooth the water out enough since it's running very fast.

I've promised myself I'll start taking shots of running water/waterfall shots at a few secs both +/- now since I inevitably seem to run the clock for too long or not enough !

Great suggestion. I've gone and made some tweaks to emphasis this light.
