p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Mono Lake

On my trip to California last month, I had the chance to check out Mono Lake...we had been on the road all day, Bodie Ghost Town was a frustrating experience, and then all the great clouds that had been hanging around all day vanished as soon as we set foot on the parking lot at the South Tufa area...kinda typical for me...but, I stayed positive, and went out in search of the image I wanted. The minimal atmosphere really worked out, and I was pretty happy with the image I came away with.

Thanks for taking a look, any comments or crits are welcomed with a very open mind!

Hi Travis,

I really like this one. I think you did very well with the conditions you had at the time. Mono lake is a very special place, and clouds come and go quickly.
Lucky me I'm only 30 minutes away.
I wonder what happend at Bodie.

Cheers,

Francisco.

Thanks for taking the time...I was beginning to think the image was not worth posting.

Lucky you to live so close, that is nice.

Bodie was frustrating for me, on a creative level and it was something of a let down from what my mind had built it up to be...100% my fault...

Very nice contrast of warm rocks. I just wish you could get a bit closer to get these pretty rock formations bigger.

Really like this image, it is truly ethereal in mood.

Did you use any filters to get a 120s exposure and also ow did you get the cool blue with the warmer colour on the rocks/mountains, was that a PP thing. I like it very much though.

Thanks. The blue tones of the sky and the blue greens of the water seemed to work well together so I went with it!

Thanks Tim, I had to get over the frustration of no clouds...but I like minimalism so it worked out.

Thanks for taking the time, I could have shot with a longer lens, and maybe I should have considered a pano with the rocks that way.

Thanks so much. Yes, I was using filters, a LEE .9 GND and the LEE Big Stopper 10 Stop ND.

You might have been frustrated by the lack of clouds but you certainly capitalized on what you were given to work with! Love the clean simplicity and mood you captured here.

Well done Travis!

Hi Dave, thanks for taking the time to look and give some feedback. glad it works for you. I usually do pretty good at overcoming initial frustration...Bodie earlier in the day was not the case but I worked through it at Mono Lake.

Travis, excellent image. It takes skill to make a "Silk Purse". I went to Mono in mid October and had a similar experience. I went about mid day and two days later at sunrise. No clouds or weather, but for the sunrise a lot people wandering with their lights. Tough to get something without them in the image. However, an amazing place anyway and I will go back. I admire what you accomplished.

Chuck

Travis,
The LE works great I like the shot the way it is and I might also be tempted to make a 2nd version with a crop above the FG rock a 6x17 or 1x2.5 for an even more abstract feel. Excellent work !

Dean

Thanks for the feedback Chuck. I did the best I could with the conditions mother nature provided...outside of that I just enjoyed being at such a strange place. It was crawling with photographers, and that was an added challenge..trying to find a composition that did not highlight another camera operator...and also not be in someone else's shot. I will go back...no doubt about that.

Thanks Dean. I thought about cropping out the foreground rock, both in camera and after in post...while it did make it more minimal and a bit more abstract and probably how I would normally prefer the presentation...but for this one I kinda liked the anchor in the bottom of the frame...
