After my visit to white Pocket a little over a month ago I decided to hit it again the following week with the promise for more storms by the National Weather service.
They were right on the money.
What didn't produce very well during monsoon season the storms of mid October were pretty exceptional.
There are two image with the monsoon storm at WP. The first image was as it approached from the south and lightning above the rock formations. At this point the storm was about a mile away or so. The thunder was only a few seconds after the bolts. It really made the adrenaline rush.
The first shot was taken at 24mm or so and if you look closely to the right of the lightning you will see a small funnel cloud dropping from the storm. Thankfully it only grew to only a couple hundred feet in length at my best guess. Pretty cool to watch though.
The shot right below this is after the storm passed right over us with lightning, rain, hail and wind. It was crazy. I rushed over to these formations to catch the bolts as it exited WP.
What an amazing experience to say the least. well worth the 17 hours of driving

Dang Klaus! These are stunning. You got some crazy weather conditions. I can only imagine how much of a rush this shoot was. Electric!

Stunning. Were you using a lightening trigger? Or just long exposures?

If using a trigger, would you mind sharing what brand?

Thanks and I was using a lightning trigger.
It's the Stepping Stone Version IV from Rich Davis. Great little device!

Incredible shots of an incredible place. I'd be concerned out there if such a storm came through. Not a place to be stranded, unless you wanted to be.

these are great shots - how long did it take you to drive to the white pockets once you got onto the white house trail head off 89 - did you spend the night or just the day - how bad was the road did you need 4wd and high clearance

Thanks and indeed it can get very scary.
I usually don't get too scared until a bolt hits within 100 feet of me. That has happened several times in my life.
