I finally made it here! For years now I've marveled at some awesome photos of Horseshoe Bend shared by other photographers on FM. None of the images I've seen (including my own) duplicate the feeling of awe this place gives you while standing on the edge of the cliffs that plunge to the Colorado River 1000 feet below.
What I didn't expect was the popularity of this location. I didn't know It was right off the highway and just a short several hundred yard walk to the cliffs. The ease of access makes this a busy little place. Crowds aside the view far outweighed any negatives I could muster up.
Before departing on this trip I picked up a Canon 10-22mm thinking that would have to be wide enough to conquer any grand vistas I encountered. Not so... I immediately starting shooting pano's at 10mm (x1.6)

Laying on my stomach, chest, head, and arms outstretched as far as I could reach without tipping over the edge I shot these four images horizontally and stacked top to bottom in an attempt to convey the spectacular depth of this scene.

C&C always welcome and appreciated!

Thanks!

I really like the depth that the clouds add -- both with the low clouds on the left side, the clouds in the sky, and the shadow of the cloud in the lower mid right. With your multi shot wide angle stitch, you do a nice job capturing the feeling of being at the very edge -- mostly because the foreground is honestly looking straight down, whereas many photos from this location are looking at a somewhat downward angle in the foreground. Very well done Tim.

Hey Tim,

That is pretty cool looking. Nice thinking on how you shot it, not sure I would do that, but it sure worked for you.

A pretty nice shot of an iconic location.

If I believe your story, you put a lot of unnecessary risk taking into getting a picture that's not really a magnitude better than the simple classic (as I hear flight for life going overhead right now). There are tripods made for these type shots. My Gitzo Explorer comes to mind.
