The new company is called TowerJazz Panasonic Semiconductor Co. Ltd.

However, I think the main point was that there is another source to get sensors from other than Sony....which is a good thing IMO.

There are sensors, and there are sensors. If panasonic had anything to compete with Sony they wouldn't have sold out and their flagship GX8 would have a "panasonic" sensor instead of a Sony one. Why would you buy a part from a supplier for 40% more if you could build it yourself? The commensurate price increase from GX7 to GX8 is a solid indicator Panasonic completely lost to Sony... follow the money and you can see they no longer control all the pieces that go into their "widget".

Panasonic can get 16mpix sensors from Tower Jazz till the cows come home, its true, but who wants those?

I believe Olympus currently buy their sensors from both, Sony and Panasonic or Tower Jazz Panasonic. But who cares where Olympus gets their sensors from as long as they are they are really good.

I am not sure I follow this logic. A price increase indicates how they lost out to Sony?

20MP Four Thirds type sensor

updated 'Venus Engine' processor

addition of Dual IS

larger magnesium alloy body ...more solid than the GX7

2.36m dot OLED panel

weather sealed

There are plenty of things that make this camera more expensive than the Gx7, and the GX8 cost is in line with other premium u4/3 cameras. You do have a point about using a Sony sensor instead of a Panasonic sensor. Regardless Panasonic TowerJazz is another potential source for sensors. The Leica Q will get its sensor from TowerJazz. Micro 4/3 may not be in the cards just yet. I don't know what TowerJazz is trying to target as a product right now and I have not seen the cost estimate of one of their u4/3 sensors vs Sony.

100% agreed. That was my point. Olympus cannot, going forward, introduce a camera with anything other than a Sony sensor. Also, the same sensor will appear in a Panasonic pro body at least 6 months before Olympus can announce its camera, tilting the very small m43 "pro" segment slightly in Panasonics favor.

Of course I hope I am wrong, but thats just the way I currently see things.

I don't think it is realistic to assume a cmos supplier can produce a "small batch" of 20mpix phase detect m43 chips better and cheaper than Sony... Panasonic/Tower Jazz got stuck at 16mpix, and about iso 1600 usability, with no phase detect capability.

I will be 100% wrong if Olympus introduces a camera with anything but a Sony sensor... we'll know soon enough.

GX7 sells for @600 now, vs the $1200 for the GX8.

Weather sealing and a new viewfinder doubled the price?

My point is that Panasonic used to make sensors out of sand, which was free, now they are buying glass from Sony, which is not.

But you just said it: @600 *now*. What did the GX7 initially retail for?

$1,099.99.

So it's a $100 increase for a new EVF & weathersealing. That's not unreasonable.

Of course you are correct.

$1099 included the kit lens.

$999 body only introduction for gx7, the GX8 is body only $1199

Body only, as of Oct 14th 2015, gx7 is $490 on eBay.

So 20% more, than on introduction, and I'm sure the GX8 will drop in price before x-mas. Not unreasonable, as you say, but still reflective, to my eye, of an increase in costs.

I do not know if this has been posted, but I noticed that both B&H and Adorama, have listed the Olympus 300 f4 as "coming soon-not yet available". I know it would be nice if a specific price and availability date was listed, but it looks like the lens is getting closer.

I think B&H and Adorama have had the Oly 300 f4 on their websites since at least March. Possibly even since last year.

Oct. 10, so where is it?

The Daily Camera News figures it will not be available until next Spring around $2,000US.

B&H does not even know the price yet.

Still coming soon? Maybe just a pipe dream or Olympus going belly-up.

Dunno. Personally I think a 200 f2.8 would be more useful. Could be priced around $1000, which is a bit more than the Canon 200 2.8 l and could be mated with the 1.4 tic. Could be around the same size as the 40-150 pro, which would be very portable.

Announcement from both Olympus and Panasonic expected on January 6 and the lenses should be available around end February.

$2500 is going to rule it out for me. Not that I am broke but that sting is going to reduce the fun factor. I know some will say it's cheaper than a Canikon 600 f4 but then it should be as it has only about 25 per cent of the glass.

The Nikon PF300mm f4.0 is already quite expensive for what it is... a 300mm f4.0, and this lens has a new optical type of glass, state of the art VR and a small build that will rival the size of the Olympus. With needing to cover a much smaller image circle and requiring no backwards compatibility (a major cost savings), it is difficult to understand why the Olympus lens will be more $500 more than Nikon's newest attempt. Sure the Olympus has an effective focal length of 600mm, but a 300mm lens is a 300mm regardless of the film or sensor size.

I hope it pans out for folks like bobbytan, as I know that he and others have been waiting a long time for this lens to finally hit the market.
regards,
bruce

The Nikon 300/4 PF doesn't care much more about backward compatibility than the coming Oly 300/4. The Nikkor 300/4 PF is an E type lens with only electronic communication with the camera, and no mechanical aperture linkages at all. The 300/4 PF will only work on those Nikon bodies that support the E type lenses, i.e. D3/D300 and newer.

There are many, including myself, that would rather have the 300 f4.

And you can buy a used Canon 200 f2.8 I in great condition for $400.

It depends on one's needs and personal perceived value I guess. Although I have a FF Sony, I cannot afford a 600-800mm lens. Neither am I willing to deal with the bulk/weight of a FF lens. So to me (and I admit that I may be in the minority group) the Olympus 300/4 PRO and Pan-Leica 100-400 are both freaking amazing lenses if the quality is on par with any other PRO lens or the Nocticron ... and I suspect that it will be for a $2,200-2,500 m43 lens.

Pardon my dumb question, but does Olympus have a newer model NON-mirrorless camera this lens would work on?

I still prefer an OVF and something with decent AF in AI Servo mode.

No.

If you have an E-M1 with Version 4.0 Firmware there is a new feature called "Simulated Optical Viewfinder". I have not tried it so I can't comment on usefulness of this feature. This is from the Olympus site:

Simulated Optical Viewfinder was added.
* Setting is possible when the mode dial is P/A/S/M.
* Shooting settings are not reflected in the EVF display.
* Can be set in Custom Menu [J] > S-OVF.
