Guys, please excuse my ignorance. If wide angle fixed focal length M lenses don't play well with the Sony sensor, then why does the WATE?
Also, I have a bunch of old glass I acquired for use with my A7S but recently sold it to go to the A7RII. Really neat stuff like OM 21/3.5, 50/1.2, 100/2, Rokkor 58/1.2, Canon FD 80-200/4L, Nikon 28/2.8 AIS, 50/1.2 AI, 90mm Bokina, and a couple of Zeiss ZF mounts and Leica M mounts, etc. Except for the Zeiss and Leica glass, I'm really worried about what I'm going to see with the others when I purchase an A7RII. Will I be disappointed and eventually sell them?
The A7S resolution was just a bit too small for me (but forgiving). And if your answer is that my old glass is going to need to go, I can throw in the possibilities of purchasing an A7II instead of the A7RII or plan to use the A7RII in crop mode if the corners are the biggest issue. Your opinions here are most welcome as well. Thank you!!!...Show more →
The WATE's design keeps the exit pupil far enough away from the sensor to avoid too steep an angle of incidence on the light hitting the edges of the sensor. It's an entirely different design from, say, a ZM Biogon 21.
Only you can say what's acceptable to you. I shoot nothing but legacy lenses and while I'm only in my third week with the a7rII, I'm very happy with the ones I've used on it so far (Summilux-M 35 pre-A, Elmarit-M 28 vIII, Summicron-M 90 pre-AA, Tele-Elmar-M 135, APO-Elmarit-R 180, APO-Telyt-R 280/2.8 with and without the 1.4x, ZF 25/2, Rokkor 58/1.2, Canon FD 85/1.2, APO-Rodagon-N 50 and 75) and they haven't developed any newfound issues between the 7II and the 7rII. The fast primes vignette a little less at wider apertures on the 7rII, but the new sensor hasn't made any of my lenses unusable so far.
