Outstanding:
Contax 28-85 f/3.3-4.0 Vario-Sonnar (although some CAs in the edges @28 wide open)
Contax 100-300/f4.5-5.6 Vario-Sonnar (APO grade correction, stellar contrast and rendering @100)

Realy good:
Contax 1.4/85 Planar

May I see the sample photo of 100% crop from 100-300 VS with A7RII?

I have just received the lenses a few days ago, not much time for shooting yet. But what I see so far looks very promising on A7RII
This is a snap from around my house @300 wide open handheld:

Great thread - my workhorse video lens on the A7rII is the old Tokina Angenieux ATX Pro 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8 in Nikon mount. Its parfocal, usable wide open, very sharp stopped down a click, hard stops so moves are repeatable and just has a really nice rendering.

I am very curious about this. Can anyone explain/link to differences in sharpness, contrast, fringing, rendering, etc?

I owned both at one point. Sold off the EF 85 after testing the two lenses side by side.

In good light, the two lenses are indistinguishable. It's only when you have a strong light source in the frame (the sum) that you see the EF 85L pull away in terms of flare control. Outside of that, sharpness, bokeh, colors, etc etc are practically identical. The FD version has a closer MFD too, so its easier to shoot with.

Putting the FD version up for sale though. Batis 85 happened.

Mystik: That's what I have heard, and I had a chance to shoot the EF II a while back, but not to compare. I have used the FD 85L extensively over the last year. They seemed to render very similarly, I thought maybe there was a pinch better contrast on the EF, but didn't know.

Lovely shot of the baby--reminds of my niece, half Sri Lankan, half white, but a gorgeous baby.

No one has mentioned the Voigtlander 180mm f4. Smallest lens with such a long focal length and outstanding optics on the A7 RII.

Thanks! You aren't missing much by not getting the EF 85LII, other than autofocus. But the DOF at f1.2 is so shallow that I don't trust any AF system outside of eye focus (which doesn't work with adapted lenses) to get the focus right, so manual focus is the way to go. The MF ring on the EF 85L is terrible.

Although my experience is with the original Sony A7r, I guess it applies well to the new A7rII:
If you need a small, good performer, polyvalent short tele and f/2.8 is fast enough for you, I can’t recommend enough the latest version of the Leica Elmarit 90/2.8 (both in R and M mount. They’re optically the same ).
It’s a terrific lens already at f/2.8. I compared it to the, otherwise very good, Contax Sonnar G 90/2.8. The Elmarit was clearly better full open and, of course, much more comfortable to focus.
The advantage of the R versions over the M is the lower price and the shorter minimal focus distance ( if you use an M adapter with helicoids, that won’t matter much, though ).
Ergonomically, both lenses have the same length when the respective adapters are fitted. The black Elmarit 90 M is thinner and a tad lighter than his brother in R mount, but the M in chromed brass is heavier.

I don't yet own an A7rII yet but have had excellent results with the Contax G lenses mentioned previously, 45mm and 90mm, as well as the 35mm. Keeping on the Zeiss front the 35, 50, and 85mm f1.4 lenses for the old Rollei 35SLR's, so called QBM lenses, are great but may be harder to find than for other camera mounts (the 35 and 85 however are not very small).

Surprinsingly, nobody yet has stated the obvious, so I will do it. Among the really outstanding performers on A7RII are
Zeiss Otus 55mm f:1.4
Zeiss Otus 85 f:1.4
Zeiss Z* 135 f:2.0 APO

You can add 100/2 Makro-Planar on that list as well.

One of the gems is the Canon FD 35/2. It has a very Zeiss like feel to the images.

In terms of resolution and contrast, you can see measured MTF's here (Google Translate Source):

They're basically identical with each lens "winning" in different places across the frame and apertures.

I am speaking from a7ii...fewer megapixels, but I don't think that is an issue for these...

Look for it in Pentax K mount. They come up rarely, but are much cheaper. I just purchased one for $899. Still the most expensive lens I have ever purchased, but optically excellent. I don't have an A7rII, or a full frame body for that matter (still the lowly NEX 5), but it is stunningly sharp when I use it properly, and has great colors. I wouldn't be surprised if modern 70-200mm f/4 zooms come fairly close in sharpness, but the size is what really makes it special.

Curmudgeon statement for sure, but if you want to know what lens are oustanding...

I got one a few months ago for around US1300 in Pentax screw mount, absolutely mint (which makes me a bit nervous as I feel it's somehow a collectors item and I worry about it in my backpack. But that's the cheapest I've seen. I envy the previous poster who got a K mount one for 900!

It is lovely. I've built some baffling out of telescope flocking which I've inserted in the novoflex adapter, to make a rectangular opening modelled on the one in Metabones adapters. It seems to up the contrast wide open.

Net result is that it's pretty much the same at all apertures, super sharp, noticeably sharper than the 70-200 zoom at all apertures, and of course (which was the point of the purchase) the lightest and smallest way I could get a high quality longish lens (the Apo telyt 180 3.4 is swings and roundabouts for quality, but much larger)

It doesn't have that glossy contrast of a modern lens for better or worse. Very, very sharp but only moderately contrasty. A touch less contrast than the Sony zoom, even though more detailed.
