Minolta 35-105 and 100/2. 200/2.8. Sony 135/1.8 is staggering. Wouldn't trade it for a Zeiss 135 APO. Sony Zeiss 85/1.4. Minolta 35/1.4 G.

Minolta or Sony 135STF. So, so easy to use. And such a unique lens. Best bokeh in the world.

Sorry for asking, but did you actually keep the 135 1.8?

Lux 75 works great. So as to keep the post compact, here are a few links to some casual portraits with it from a party I went to, from memory, 1 and 3 were wide open, 2 was at F 2.8 and 4 at F2.

Other lenses that work great other than native mount include:

Leica WATE
Leica 90/2 AA
CV 35 1.2
Leica R 28 2.8 v. II

Not initially. I couldn't hold my a7 with it attached one handed, which made my lighting solution untenable. I bought a VG and switched out my off-camera flash stand for a better one, and it will be here next week. So stoked. I have shot it twice now, and every time I get images that surprise me.

My list of superb third party lenses:

75 Lux
50 Nocti f/1.0
50 Cron IV Mandler
WATE

That said and having just come back from a trip to Spain, I have decided to cull my lenses even more so. I found I was using just a few lenses, and really did not pick up the 50 Nocti f1.0, 75 Lux or the WATE that much.

So this week I have sold all three, 50 Nocti f/1.0, 75 Lux and WATE and my bank account is 18K AUD better. I just need a handful of lenses that work really well with great ergonomics.

I was finding with the improved rendering with the A7rII, I have been looking for different qualities in my images.

I am usually a 50mm shooter, but the FE 35/1.4 is my lens to go. If I need WA I take the Batis 25. I eagerly awaiting the Batis 85 as this will fill the gap. I have still decided to keep the 50 Cron IV(Mandler) as this is an amazing lens.

I was noticing that with the 50 Nocti f/1.0 there was more CA on the A7rII than with the A7s to the point I felt the lens was becoming unusable near f/1.0.

The 75 Lux is superb, but now awaiting the Batis 85 will be excellent. The extra reach for portraits will be handy.

The WATE is still a legend for it's size and weight and for the most the Batis 25 was excellent in every respect.

Zeiss 35/1.4 ZM - did not like rendering/bokeh, sold
Zeiss 50/1.5 ZM - love the low contrast look, great bokeh

Leica 60 Macro-Elmarit-R - great for product photos
Leica 90 Cron AA - excellent, one of my favorites
Leica 90 Elmarit-M - great, almost as good as 90AA and small/light, but sold
Leica 135 Tele-Elmar-M - great, but rarely used

Samyang 135/2, Minolta 135/2.8 AF, Sony 28-75/2.8 SAM. Minolta MD 35-135/3.5-4.5 is surprisingly good at infinity.

See this link for the latter two.

The WATE is indeed good but I find the CV 15 III to be sharper in the corners when I compare the WATE at 16mm.
Yes the summilux 50 renders beautifully but I find in real life use the FE55 just to be more versatile and I just couldn't really afford to keep the 50 lux for very occasional use.

Well, the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM is pretty decent too, if you want a fast quality zoom in the 24-70 range. With good AF too.

So, is this list for personal favourites or is it a list telling us the lenses work as good on the A7RMkII as on the camera they were made for?
I ask as I'm not sure what's outstanding with the Rokkor M 40/2 (for example).

Agreed. The Rokkor M 40/2 is a great lens but corners are smeared and poor on the A7R II. It is simply not up to this sensor. That doesn't make it any the less worthwhile because it is a lens well suited for street photography and works well on the a7 and Nex 7. It is not IMO suitable for landscape work.

I have been using my Minolta CLE MC 40mm f2 M-Rokkor on my A7r since I purchased the camera mainly at about f8 or f11 for DOF for my landscapes. It may not be crisp in the corners without a Kolari sensor modification but I find it acceptable for many of my images. I will reserve judgement for this application for the A7rII when I purchase one in the future. But, It will still maintain a place in my arsenal of lenses as it is so tiny and light, something that I can not say about most any other available option.

Don't want to beat a dead horse but Fred tested the CV15 III a couple weeks ago, in this thread, and concluded that it smeared in the extreme corners, making it an effective 16-17mm (after cropping)

When I owned the CV16 I never noticed the smearing and I honestly feel the corners are about equal (although the WATE performed better in a recent comparison in this thread )

The CV16 is a winner because it's cheap, small, and exhibits almost no distortion. However LCA was quite strong, and difficult to remove completely in LR. The WATE is more versatile (16-18-21mm) with gorgeous rendering, but is expensive and has strong distortion.

As with all lenses, neither is perfect and it's hard to conclude which is better. I kept the WATE because I preferred it's colors and versatility of 3 focal lengths.

Make it a little clearer in the vey extreme corners. It's extremely good even wide open. I've run tests on it as well. It's also called a CV 15 so if your hell bent on getting that extreme corner which you will even get with a Zeiss 15 2.8, Samyang 14 and even the Wate than you need to crop in ever so slightly. Pick your poison because they all do it. Where talking 15mm super wide lenses here. Unless your backed up to a wall there is plenty of Focal length to work with. The little CV15 is amazing for the money. I just finished cutting off the fixed hood which is really worthless . Working on that thread now.

But seriously both the Wate and CV15 are extremely good lenses and either one will serve you very well. The new CV15 version III has no smearing at all, no color cast at all on the new A7R2. One other point about these super wides you have to be really careful with these tests as this wide and this slower FStop make these a bear to focus dead on the money. They have such DOF that it's very hard to focus very precisely. Frankly it's the hardest lens I have come across to focus manually on the A7 series. So view tests with a little reservation in them. They are tough to nail expecially in the longer zone of focus. Great lenses can't go wrong with either one.

Very simple price it right. People are trying to hard to get there initial investment back. Not going to happen. As a person that buys a ton of glass I'm going to not even going to look at a lens new at 1000 let's say and there asking 875 used. If it's a rare lens to get say the Batis 25 right now you get what you paid because people are waiting a long time and very short supply. A 551.8 not so everyone has one except me right now but I won't go past 600 for one. Just too many available and in plenty of supply plus you get some big sales on a new one. I buy and sell a lot. Here is something to think about you buy a lens you go to sell it. Forget what you paid , it's the net rent you paid that counts. Think of it as renting.

I'd assume you're replying to me? I agree with both your points.

Honestly I'm not a tech person and I could care less about extreme corner performance at infinity. With wide-angle lenses, especially with landscapes, I always like to have a strong foreground to establish a spatial relationship with the background. It always helps to enhance that wide-angle look, so I get as close as I can to the foreground.

As for focusing, I usually shoot my WATE at f8 and use the focus scale. I carry a Bosch laser rangefinder to aid with the distance. Laser measuring devices are especially useful at night when live-view can get noisy and nearly impossible to focus.
