Hi Ian,

What are you trying to achieve with this image?

I just don't find the subject to be very interesting, and the composition to be even less or even artistic and find the monochrome conversion to be rather bland.

Any ideas?

Nigel.

There you again Nigel, with your constructive critique. I'm sure Ian has learned a lot from your comment.

I think most people that frequent these forums know Ian is a fine portrait photographer, and landscapes are a little outside his comfort zone.

What would you like me to say? Better still how would you critique this image as you have taken the time to post a negative response to my initial post. I guess its easier to have a pop at me though!

I really don't care about his portraits as I have never seen or commented on those and that isn't what he posted here on the Landscape Forum... I posted a comment on what he posted here and to my eye its not a very good landscape image and I expressed my view.

Get over yourself Fishjump and stop trying to start something that doesn't exist.

Hey Ian!
Without going into "who has a bigger" debate, and straight to the point:
1.I like the light, and your BW conversion,
2.BG looks good too,
3.FG is too busy to make sense of it, which is the main issue here, imho moving to the right and using the road as a leading line toward the BG could help, but its a speculation, i have no way of checking...

Thank you (and fishjump).

I just like it. That's all I'm trying to achieve.

I really like this one, it has a great range of tones and the juxtaposition between the pristine looking mountains/sky and the fresh logging is like a slap in the face. Thanks for reminding us that there are plenty of bleak landscapes out there in addition to the idealized wilderness scenes that are so often celebrated in this forum. Well done.

While the picture is not one I would have submitted to this forum, it does has some merit!
The dramatic sky, the wood pile which leads the eye to the hills beyond.
It may not be to Mr Turners taste, but such negative comments are not helpful to someone who is trying to expand their skill base into Landscape photography.
Please try to be more constructive, Mr Turner.

I can see that this is not to everyone's taste, and it's not a wall-hanger that's for sure ! However it is far from meritless and some time taken studying the photography reaps it's reward.

It is bleak, those are stark hills and one can imagine that there used to be, at least, a fine wooded area to balance the scene. However it has been wiped out and this could maybe be used as a poster for a number of 'Green' organisations. I do find the shot to be a little too weighted to the right though.

I do tend to favour the bleak and stay away from the idealised images of anything so my landscape shots would be similar, I'd imagine, especially as I was having a bleak week last week and went to Scotland to escape it. Here, as examples, are two non-landscape shots from Blackpool and Manchester. It's just how I see things ... thank goodness we all take photos in different styles.
