p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Moenkopi Erosion

Here a massive 40-50 foot (12 - 15 meter) boulder (the size of a small house) broke away from a Shinarump (hill) formation at the top of a cliff, rolled down and then came to rest on the softer Moenkopi formation at the bottom of the cliff. Over a great deal of time, the softer dirt /rock erodes (rain, wind…) away leaving a soft pedestal on which the harder rock rests and ironically seems to defy gravity!

For those interested, I have moved to the great and awesome Southwest now and am happier than I have been in many years. I literally live out of my rig and am now seeing, experiencing and photographing landscape 365 days a year, with the exception of the times I take a break to visit friends and family.

I am becoming friends with the native Navajo and may even find a small trailer or Hogan to live in during a few harsher winter months. As my life has sprinted directly away from complexity and the typical American rat race, I have become more and more at peace. I may never leave.

Great light to you all and thank you for looking!

Sony A7S
Canon 11-24@11mm
F/4
370 seconds
Single exposure
Conservative adjustments in Raw.

I suspect some here might take issue with the blurred stars, but I like the file and simply could not, not process it. The side lighting came when a car drove by during exposure, on the image just before this one. I was a little irritated, but then when I saw the file, I loved the side lighting it created! So, I went and parked my own rig in the far distance at the same angle as the car was (not directly on the formation but away from it) and used the ambient lighting of the headlights for the light painting.

Love the rock; don't care for the stars. For me, it's hard to view.

I like how the wide angle distortion causes the stars to appear to be zooming toward the center.

Nice light on very cool rock. I really like the strong sense of motion imparted by the star trails, it almost makes my head spin if I look at it too long. Very interesting effect.

Mark, congrats on the 365 shooting!

I love the light on the rock, but I think the star trails need to be a little longer. I usually like star trails, but these are making me a little dizzy. Great work and a very nice photo.

Love the rock !! that makes the image for me, the stars looks a lil soft , longer trailers would have been great here

Thank you. I liked how the stars create a sense of explosion from behind the image. It definitely breaks the rule about blurring stars.

I like the perspective of the rock but the stars don't do it for me. Looking at the image gives me a touch of dizziness.

I love single exposures for star trails, especially with long exposure noise reduction becoming what it is today. Although I doubt you even needed that on the A7S sensor, especially if it was cool enough.

I know it's just as easy to rattle off a sequence of 30 sec exposures and layer them together, but there's something satisfying about clicking one single shot and seeing *exactly* your creative vision on the back of the camera. It's difficult to explain to some folks who are gung-ho about "RAW capture, anything goes in post-production" ...however as someone who got started in the film days, I feel like picking your in-camera settings, including everything from Picture Styles to lens and exposure settings, is a rewarding throwback to the days when we had to "commit" to using Velvia 50, or Provia 400, or whatever it was we needed to "get the job done"...

Fantastic image; I'm totally going to borrow this concept of "jump to light speed" visual effect with the motion of the stars...

[Edit] Also, I think I may have already said this on Facebook, but I gotta be honest with the 11-24mm crowd: This is one of the ONLY images I have ever seen that makes me think "hmm, 11mm was really useful here" ...instead of "wow, that's a whole lot of wasted composition around the edges..."

Good job Mark on truly utilizing new technology to push the envelope. (I think all or most of the other 11mm images that I've actually appreciated were yours too, BTW)

In my opinion, that is part of what astro-landscape photography is about. Because sometimes, when you're out in the middle of nowhere and you're just sitting there gazing up at the heavens, it DOES make your head spin to try and comprehend the massiveness of it all. This image captures that sense of massive, mind-boggling and head-spinning force that has created our planet and universe.

I like it. I have no issue whatsoever with the short star trails.

Despite the abundance of talented photographers on this forum, I feel like far too often critiques come down to some interpretation of standard "rules of composition" and technical precision. Those are helpful for sure, but just as much (or more maybe) is to (at the right time) break them. Here breaking them really works. Subject centred in frame, stars are a OOF, maybe the lighting is not "natural". Screw all of that, I love what you've done here. I only wish people were willing to explore more. Good job.

I dig it. I don't think the trails need to be a certain way and I think it works here

What kind of car? Was the headlights on high-beam or low-beam?

Just kidding I am a gear junky with a weird sense of humor.

Seriously a great job! I just love the image!

I like the look of the stars like they are exploding from behind the rock. It breaks the rules of either sharp stars, or long star trails, but I love to experiment and just immediately liked the look here. I knew it would not be everyones cup of tea, like a lot of my work.

Great shot! I like how the star trails are going different dorections out of the top and bottom of the rock, maybe because 11 is so wide.

Nice shot. Congrats on your escape from the rat race. I have escaped too but live in a house in Joshua Tree. I would love an RV but don't think I could handle it full time

Yeah I think that is why. I love the effects of the 11!
