Some more Common Loons on the 4th of July in Northern Minnesota. It would have been perfect lighting, but the sun was obscured by the haze from the multiple fires in Canada. 7/4/15.

1) Appeared to be feeding something from the lily pad to one of the loon chick's.

More great loons, Mike! You must have been able to get quite close as there is some fine feather detail visible in 1 and 4, and it's not often that you see that detail in photos of loons. Great job!

Top notch set Mike, #1 is a stunner and deserves to be on a wall.

Nice tadpole snack.

I would have never guessed #5 is a juvenile loon. Are they flying at that age ?

Super set of loons Mike. All are well done. I just located a pair but the lake they are on is fairly wide so unless they like coming close to shore I may not get any decent shots. I may have to get a kayak after all.

Thanks Herb. They are diving now, but I've not seen them flying.

A kayak is certainly helpful. They were not bothered by my presence, but did take off after a swimmer who was splashing a 100 yards away.

Thank you. In the first photo I was waiting for her to emerge after diving and was able to catch her full frame at the moment she came up in front of me. I was fortunate she moved in my direction, usually it is the other way around.

Thanks Geoff. If they have loon chicks, I've noticed that they seem to head to a little shallower water for training.
