p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · What's wrong with the 300mm f2.8 IS Version I?

I have been trying to sell my 300mm f2.8 for a couple weeks now, on this site and on a few other sites and noticed that this lens is not selling at all anymore. Most of the ones on this site are sitting for sale for a long time at reasonable prices. Anyone have any idea why this amazing lens seems to have lost its market? I love mine, but just want to invest in something with more focal length...

I'd be happy to prove myself wrong and sell mine

Hmm... the price in the ad vs what is said in the text below is different. No mention of fees and shipping. Also noticed another listed lower and at 9+. Regardless the 300 f/2.8 IS vI is a great piece of glass with superb IQ that IMO is unmatched. I used it for many years prior to upgrading to the 400.

No idea, but I wonder if it might not be because Canon won't service their old pro gear anymore? I'm still using my beloved 300 f/2.8 non-IS that I bought new, but if I had to spring for a new lens I would cough up the dough for the newest version. What are you charging for your lens?

The $3400 price on your 300/2.8L IS is about the same as you'd expect to pay on eBay. Prices on FM B&S are generally less than on eBay.

You can check eBay used lens prices in the Lens Price Database,

The 300 f2.8 IS v1 is still serviced by Canon.

I guess 2 things.

1. Price is too high.
2. Most people shooting HS sports and college sports are not shooting nearly as much this time of year. So, the need for long glass is not there. In mid-August, you may see things pick up as newer shooters start looking for longer glass.

I sold my 300 2.8 is I about a year ago to get the 400 2.8 IS. I think mine sold for about the price you are asking now. While lenses do hold their value pretty well, I would expect to see some decline as more and more folks upgrade to the v2 and the demand for the v1 is slightly lower.

I sold my 300mm F/2.8L IS v1 two weeks ago ($3700). It was virtually flawless/as new and had rarely been used, which is why I sold it. I also added the CP in the deal to help move it. After paypal fees, I didn't make much.

I'm wondering if a) the DSLR craze has slowed enough to affect even the best lenses, and b), Canon's new image as a day-late-and-dollar-short mfg with more often than not unjustified premium prices is having a negative effect; meaning, people are choosing other mfgs with better price points and superior tech (e.g., Sony and Nikon) even without the lens line up.

No one has told Canon that the USD vs. Yen is back to 95% of its traditional (i.e., past 15 year historic) range and offering slim discounts is not going to have much of an affect. This means their lenses (and ours) will have to come down from the insane price hikes in the last few years. I'd bet that you're going to see sales on the v2, or Canon will just internally decide to ramp back production.

Just a thought. Canon lenses will work on Sony gear (new A7R II) with an adapter at/near (ostensibly) native speed if you think you might want to keep it.

As mentioned....peak of the summer....may not be the best time....except for the exceptional one person "now" in the market.

As always in selling upper priced articles....you can go for a period of time...and about the time
you didn't "bump" your post....the guy that just listed sells

As a seller..one always has to consider the "real" bottom line...and work with the flow.
Either you'll come down or make concessions...or in time...you'll sell due to new viewers.

Took me months to sell my 8-15mm and after finally getting rid of it, all the want-to-buy threads started to come out of the woodwork

I think when selling relatively expensive gear, it's perhaps wise to consider pricing from a potential "buyers" viewpoint.

Buyer's purchasing Used gear "sight unseen", based on the seller's Rating & description can check out the Adorama or B&H Used Departments; where all sales include a 90 day, Unconditional Return Policy.

Individual "Sight unseen" "Sales-final", No guarantee items would have to be substantially lower in price to be attractive.

I really want this model lens but don't have enough money saved up yet.
A friend of mine lucked out and bought an IS model for $2500 and I missed one on sportsshooter.com for$2800.
There is one locally that looks cleaner for $3200 out the door, so I'm leaning towards that.

As one of the other guys said, hopefully the market will pick up once school starts again.

Good Luck. Noticed a few Version 2 lenses already at $5100 and $4800, ouch.

Its just not the season to sell long, fast, glass. Wait until August or September when prep football starts. Things move quick then.

Canon refurbished price on the 300 2.8 IS mkII is $4880 with full warranty. Granted, I live in a no sales tax state so I'm lucky but there is no way I would pay $3400 for a IS mkI when for a little more I can get the current release. They are in stock 5-6 times a year you just have to keep looking.

Nothing is wrong with the IS I, prices have been dropping on camera equipment new and used recently due to the yen normalizing against the US dollar again. That, and used equipment prices will continue to drop over time, thats just the way things go.

Actually the ver. I has a lot going for it. It is nearly as good as the ver. II. There are not many who could tell the difference in photos taken with each. For the discerning eye, yes, the ver. II is superior, but not by that much.
The ver. I is very nearly the same weight as ver. II. Only a few ounces different.
Ver. I is very fast on exposure. Fast enough to shoot birds and wildlife.
Frankly ver.I is a good choice for those of us who are financially challenged.

I sold mine(easy B&H 9) last fall for $3200 complete, minus trunk keys, with some accessories for lack of use without even having to list it. I took a slight hit from what I paid for it, but the way I look at it is I simply rented it for .18¢ a day over the years I owned it.

Good luck.

Edit: As for what's wrong with it, absolutely nothing.
