Just received my Zeiss Loxia 50mm lens today. Weather here is a bit lousy so I have to stay close to home - however, the few shots I have been able to get look promising.

As with the 35 Loxia - outstanding build quality, relatively small size, wonderful color, sharp and sharper, lovely Bokeh in most situations. In general he Planar lenses yields a very smooth 'painterly' quality. (with a few drawbacks.) These Loxias have been optimized for the A7x cameras so the results are definitely better than previous Planars - IMO.

Focus is easy and smooth with the A7x magnify manual focus mode.

I love mine. What do you think compared to 35?

Dave,

I really did not expect the 50mm to be the 'Superb' lens that the 35 is. I am surprised at how much I like it .. a lot! The 35 is really nice - this 50 has a different rendering but just as nice as the 35.

The light got a bit better this morning so I got a few more shots in.

Rick I had the 35 and the 50. My little glitch on the 35 was the bokeh was a bit nervous and if I did not have the burning desire to get the 35 1.4 I would have kept it. The 50mm in my mind is the gem of the 2. It is sharper wide open and has nice bokeh throughout the range. I kept the 50mm and it is a little sweetheart of a lens. I loved the 55mm 1.8 but thought it was a bit clinical in look and prefer the rendering of the Loxia 50 better. Happy shooting

That 35mm 1.4 is quite the lens. I complain about it's size yet I can curl 65lb dumb bells. The irony of that. Maybe if I see enough nice images I will get over it's size factor.

Dave get over the size factor. This lens is worth the size. Honestly though its as big as my 16-35 which Im selling anyway but it really is the same size and weight which weight wise the 35mm just does not feel that heavy. No question it has size to it. IQ is just flat outstanding. If your picky about glass than you want this on your list

GM - my thinking exactly.. I did not get the 55 1.8 - although the sharpest lens anyone has ever seen! - I too felt it a bit clinical.. the Loxia 50 has a sweet rendering - if I may. The 35 1.4 is an amazing lens but far too big for me to carry around. I am thrilled with the Loxia pair - great IQ, plus - relatively small - particularly compared Otus and Sig 50 art etc. Obviously one has to confront Manual focusing - but on an A7 - it is really pretty slick. If I were shooting lots of action, I would get a 55 or Batis 85.

This combination of A7x and Loxia 35/50 is a dream come true in terms of size and weight - just right - coupled with a no compromise IQ.

It's a great lens. I love the fit and feel on the a7II, and a click-less aperture when there are enough blades to keep a decent circle no matter where it's set is a thing of beauty. I don't understand why some people think of that as a "video-only" feature. It's a useful tool for getting exactly as much depth as you need without unnecessarily losing light.

What I'd really like is if I could talk Cosina into remounting my Summicron 50 into one of those bodies.

One more agreement, with you, Rick, a delightful lens.
A couple of comments, though. There are situations when the bokeh can be a bit nervous, which is not unusual for a Planar IMHO. And you talk about sharpness, when I thought the amount of detail tended to oveshadow the underlying sharpness somewhat, to the extent that one might at times feel the lens not to be supersharp, but superdetailed.
But, overall, for the shooter who wants a 50mm prime on his A7, a class-leading contender IMHO.

Loxia 50 just arrived. First user impressions - what counts, probably, as it's clear from comments everywhere that the imaging is superb - is that it is a dream lens to use on the A7RII. Initially thrown by not having (or being able) to change aperture in camera and instead needing to use an actual aperture ring (!) and see the aperture appear in the EVF. The next joy was not having to half-depress the shutter button to engage magnification - just rotate the beautifully smooth and weighted focusing ring and instant 5x mag. Then press the centre button on the control ring to go to 12x. Ergonomically fabulous.

Just to add to this, I had the Loxia 50, and today just picked up the 35. I didn't think I would be happy with a full manual focus setup, but man was I wrong. Such amazing lenses. I haven't yet got to try out the 35, but here is one from the 50.

Thinking further it occurs to me that most of us posting here are enthusiasts. We enjoy taking pictures. Of course there is a lot of obsessing, much of it over arcane detail, corner / mid-field sharpness, etc but that's probably irrelevant in real life to those of us who don't do this for a living, who don't need to produce prints measured in feet rather than inches. Nevertheless, we still pursue excellence, even if we might not be able to justify it in our output (apologies to those who can). But there is something wonderful about using great tools. However, there is more to greatness than extreme resolution and sharpness. Character is hugely important of course; the reason people love the Contax G 45/2 is the dimensionality, crispness, beautiful colours of images it can produce, the Zeiss "pop" - I still regret selling mine, along with the G2, which was the finest camera I've ever owned until the A7rII came along. But I digress. What I'm trying to say is that for me the enjoyment of a lens or camera comes about largely by how they play together and how they involve the photographer in the making of an image. And this is why, for me, the Loxia 50 is such a revelation. I've only had it a few hours but it is an absolute joy to use and I know the IQ will be amongst the best achievable; perhaps not critically the best but certainly good enough for me. I'm pretty sure I shall be getting the Loxia 35 too in time. For the same reasons

I had both the Sony 55 1.8 and Loxia 2/50 and the Sony 35 1.4 FE and Loxia 2/35. I decided to sell the 55 1.8 and 35 1.4 FE. The Loxia's smaller size and beautiful rendering make them such a perfect match for the A7 cameras. I loved them both on the A7II and now my A7R2. Like Rick Perry said if I did a lot of action work the 55 1.8 and 35 1.4 would be the way to go but with landscape and travel photography these Loxia's are a dream kit.

Ice322,

Most people like the 55 ..it is a great lens. The Planar has been criticized for not being as sharp as some other designs like the Sonnar. My point is that sharpness is not the only criteria that a lens should be judged by. Please do not be offended by my saying clinical .. If I said "too sharp" you would all think I was crazy! Lens design is a compromise of many things.. I happen to like the way Planars render .. that's all. There is nothing wrong with 55 .. I just prefer the slightly less sharp Loxia.

Ice, Rick, most people do love the FE 55 but not all, and you are not alone. I tried it out, and was do unimpressed, except by the sharpness, and the AF of course, that I tried a second copy, and did not buy. Then so many people loved it that I decided that there must be some hidden secret to that lens, and I bought it. I kept it for 6 months, and have but one or two keepers to show for it. On the other hand, I loved my Loxia 50. That is one lens I still have seller's remorse over, except I had to make room for the Otus 55.

There is a great selection of 50's that work amazingly well.

FE 55/1.8 wonderful. At f/1.8 is great for portraits and the testament is how many portrait photographers use this lens.

Loxia 50 great lens. This lens is very sharp, but it does require a different PP'ing workflow. it renders beautifully IMO. I love the feel of this lens.

50 Cron IV. This lens is tiny and truly a surprise package. I had previously used the 50 Cron DR, wonderful lens but it now suffers on the edges with the A7rII with the higher res. The 50 Cron IV is sharp, detailed right from f/2.0 and it so small...! If you like the Mandler rendering and size/weight are an issue do try this lens This lens was the series just before the 50 Cron Asph.

50 Nocti f/1.0, works wonderfully well with the A7rII. With IBIS and 42MP, it is very easy to nail the focus while it maintains the wonderful Mandler rendering.
